Hi,

I THINK this is a BR Roo x Wel Hen. It’s a pretty chick admittedly but I’m not sure whether having a BR Roo makes it sex linked and I was wondering if anyone has seen this pattern before?

All offspring of a barred rock rooster should be barred, and wouldn't be sex linked. Black sex links occur when a non-barred rooster is mated to a barred hen. In that cross, all male offspring will be barred and have spots on the head and female offspring won't have either.

I kind of doubt this chick is the result of a barred rock x Welsummer. I would expect a much darker chick from that cross. It is difficult to tell if this chick has barring at all. Maybe. I'd just wait and see what develops.

Great thanks for the information, i always wondered why people talked about BR hens more than Roos. I need to swap the Roo and ger a BR hen to make life easier!

With more thought I think this is a warren...

A welsummer or Rhode Island red rooster over barred rock hens make ideal sex links. Not only do the male chicks have the head spots at birth, but the female chicks would usually have rusty red coloring at the face. Easy to tell apart right away.

Thank you - with all that the internet offers, old fashioned asking someone is far more effective.

I think this has confirmed/faciitated what i've wanted for a while - two flocks.

Flock 1: RiR Roo x Rock Hens - sex linked (Meat)
Flock 2: WEL Roo x WEL Hens - auto sex (Eggs)
