How ya doing today?
I'm good. Dog show is over and now I can focus on my other obligations. Can't wait till I can just relax againAs far as chickens go, I feel booth very excited and over-whelmed. I have 8 eggs in the incubator (the first time I"m really using one), 15 chicks coming in just 3 days, and I just got four chicks. I already have around 58 chickens as is!
We also just trapped and got rid of a skunk that has been eating all of our eggs, so I'm really hoping that our egg production rises from nearly zero eggs a day (besides some really dirty, smelly ones covered in broken egg). I collected some dried grass from the fields to put in the nest boxes and hopefully the chickens will stop making a mess of the boxes.
This winter we are getting rid of a lot of are older chickens, many of which have become egg-eaters, and replacing them with pullets that hopefully don't know how to eat eggs.
How about you?
Wow!!! That's eventful!! Lovely dogs!Awesome dog! All our dogs are poodle mixes because we have allergies. They are very friendly and intelligent. We sometimes pet-sit for some lab mixes. Just thought I'd tell you this story: One of the Labradoodles (lab x poodle) we babysit for is named Cleo. We got her from a cousin who was going to breed her for puppies. However, while some one was watching the house they let her get in with the male too young and she had puppies too young and while everything went well they decided they didn't want to breed anymore. We took her, hoping to breed her, but in the end decided to get her fixed. We also took one of her puppies, Chipsie, and gave her to another cousin who has a boy with autism. When Cleo proved too aggressive with one of our female dogs (who has been fixed twice but still goes into heat), we gave her to the same people who took her daughter. We were pet-sitting the two as we usually do, when Cleo suddenly had a seizure! We have a dog with epilepsy, so we thought it was probably something like that. It was terrifying, it always is, to see a dog thrash around, drooling, biting their tongue, like they are dying. We held her down until she stopped. She laid there, dazed, her tongue sticking out. I reached out to pet her and she bit at me, ran away like I was a beast, barking and stumbling. She paced the 2 acre backyard they have fenced in, fearful of us. She somehow escaped the fence in her panic, crossed the road, and ran into the cornfield. It was awful. I told the rest of the family as fast as I could and then took off after her. She was terrified of us, as if she was hallucinating. She is usually skittish, but nothing like this. Eventually she ran into the forest and we couldn't keep up. We put up posters, called for her, walked our dogs in searches for her, drove around, but for over a week she was gone. Could she have died in the forest from her seizures? Was she hit by a car? Did coyotes get her? Was she starving? All hope seemed lost, until our cousins gave us a call. Some one had found Cleo! They called because of the tags she had. She was exhausted, nervous, and had over 100 ticks on her, but she is happy and healthy and back with her daughter and family! It was a miracle! It was so wonderful to hear the news she was okay.Cleo
