Poll: Do you think its wrong to kill your chickens?

No, I don't think it's wrong. Don't know if I could eat one of my ladies since I think of them as pets, but I wouldn't slam anyone else for it.

My chickens free range. Every year I lose a few to predators. I let some of my broodies set. I always get more roos than hens. The roos go to freezer camp. I do have a pen for roosting but sometimes the bobcats and hawks get the chooks be fore lock down. I also raise hogs for freezer camp. I pick out the roos that are nice to the chicks and hens, they get a reprieve. I have two pet pigs. My meat hogs were starving when I got them, so here they have been fed well and given a pen they can root around in. It does sadden me alittle when the time comes, but I know they were happy here. It sounds weird but they do taste better.

In a perfect world I would much prefer to never have to kill a chicken.. Yet I do out of my selfish necessity.

We too have raised hogs and beef for the freezer. That was the very purpose
of buying them. To eat.

We were kind to them. Fed them well.

And when the day came...we wrapped them in paper and put them in the freezer.

That isn't why I bought chickens.

Deer, squirrel, rabbit...I don't have a problem eating them. That is why I killed them.
For dinner.

I agree with the first part...but if i see someone being cruel to any animal I WILL voice my oppinion! I dont care if its not my animal...its a living creature and being cruel or mistreating them is wrong

yes me too, I cannot stand it when people are cruel to an animal. I WILL step in. I have killed and eaten birds before, I have my pet layers and stuff but the extra roos... Dinner

I don't think it is wrong at all as long as it is done respectfully. I've only killed, processed & eaten one of my birds in the past few years and while I didn't enjoy it, I did feel a sense of pride knowing that the bird my family was eating had lived a happy life & had a humane death. This particular roo was mean to the hens...rough & wouldn't let them eat until he was finished...so I knew I needed to let another take sole command of the flock. Later, when I just didn't need certain birds for breeding & had no room for them, I rehomed them.
