I have a very good line of pure fly tie birds and they are laying...The saddles get about 16 inches...But there is NO tails to speak of. I've had these birds for almost 20 years now....any how tell him to contact me...,.There all Barred also and large fowl....TM

those sound cool. got any pics to show off? Love fly ties..

My hen has been broody since last Wednesday. We gave her a real Phoenix egg to sit on today but she kept going to the nest she wanted.

I had another hen lay a small, usual sized brown egg today. It was light brown. Is this normal?

I wish I had one

So after the pic of the multiple feathered hen, I started looking at my birds. All of my birds that trace back to the original silver hen have the trait and the silver hatchery birds do as well. Then I got frustrated and wondered if I was counting wrong so I looked at my leghorns and they are 'normal tailed' so it looks like all of my phoenix but 1 (the only un-related golden hen) are multiple feathered. It is a good thing, right? I just need to work on figuring out how to breed them so they all always carry their tails good. A few of the ladies always walk around with nice fanned out tails but a few of them walk around with weak/droopy tails like the boys

yes Michael it's good for sure if tails are your goal, which they should be haha.

VERY odd to hear of hatchery birds with it though, must have been drop shipped or something from another breeder?? Just never seen it in them.

But yes rapid growth, multiple feathering, and non molting are all traits to look for in great long tail birds. They dont all necessarily fit the book standard for phoenix, but as a breeder I prefer to breed for the best look in my opinion, and tail thickness and lenght are at the top of that list for me. All 3 of those can be applied to all 3 sections of the tail as well.
