Post Phoenix Pics Please

I was just drooling over your site yesterday.

Expect a PM from me as soon as I narrow the field down a bit. Might be difficult for me to explain to hubby why I need another four dozen or so birds.

Thank you for being an enabler.

Hey Boggy,

Are your black Schuberts laying well enough to order a dozen eggs?
They are so beautiful!!!! Will need to PM you, saw you had a mixed
doz on ebay.....

My BBR schubert rooster is looking stunning at 9 months old.
Cant wait for him to fill out a little more!!I I had ordered a
dozen mixed schubert eggs from you last summer and got 5 hens and

they are just starting right now. Hatched a dozen today off those. The weather has been back and forth dead of winter to summer here. Has them all mixed up. Just like now, flooding again, gone be 85 tomorrow and in the low 30's at night next week. That's why they are as an assortment right now. Between the duckwings, whites, and blacks. I'm getting a few dozen a week. Shouldnt be long though and I can do them by color

Ok, thanks, BBB, I know what you mean 'bout this crazy weather......
Our nightly have averaged about 10° for 2-1'/2 months
& still in a very severe drought.

I will plan on getting with you for a request after Mid April.
I have to go to Boulder for training April 14-19th,
then that next week hope to order some!

Hi,
I have been told Phoenix make great broody hens and are also excellent at raising and teaching the chicks.
I am looking into perhaps buying 5-6 Phoenix hens this Fall. Need instinct, not breed type. I will not be breeding
them. Absolutely no cross-breeding happening. Just using them for broodies next year. Don't care about color. They will each have their own broody cage
to sit/hatch and teach their 5-6 LG Light Sussex chicks. Can anyone tell me how much such birds would cost
and how hard they are to find?
Thanks so much,
Karen in western PA, US

some one may have miss informed you. They are great moms no doubt, but they arent a very broody breed. Mine tend to MAYBE average one broody session a year per hen. If you just want broody moms for setting eggs you need to get silkies or cochins. They are the work horses when it comes to hatching eggs. and go broody about every month seems like. I sold all mine because they wouldnt produce enough to cover their feed they were broody so much.

Phoenix on the other hand, well just not so much a known broody breed. Like I said, they do do it, and are great at it, just not a bird you can rely on for setting eggs with.

Mine tend to be very broody.. I had one that set three hatches last year and would of kept going, but I refused to let her. Of course they are mostly largefowl. I don't know if the bantams are as broody or not.

Ohiki tend to be excellent mothers for me as well. They are so gentle and carring. Nothing like seeing 15 phoenix chicks trying to fit under one ohiki hen.. LOL> She looks so funny as they can't all fit anymore. but they keep trying..
