I posted pictures 7 wks ago when I got some Silver Phoenix chicks, their chest feathers were coming in tan and the conclusion was come to they were girls. At the time I thought they were about 3 wks old but obviously they were pretty newly hatched. I've had these birds *7* wks (I have 2 of them now) and all of a sudden 1 starts growing black chest feathers and a red comb. Is he a late bloomer or what?? Does it normally take them until 2 1/2 months to grow the black chest feathers? I allowed myself to get attached thinking they were girls and now I'm so attached to them there's no way I can place either.
I just think it's a really rotten thing to do for a baby bird to pretend to be a girl just long enough to secure himself a home and then show his true colors

You've got a lot of blue happening there. Th "pyle" ones are just splash blues, 2 copies of blue in them is all, dont see any dominate white in any pictured. The splash reds will look very similar to red pyles, but you can see the tell tale blue in the tail feathers on them.

first two pics look to be a blue gold duckwing
next is a goldEN duckwing (that brown is just one of the things a golden gets and shows it's not a silver)
next looks to be a wild patterned splash red
then a silver duckwing
the remainders all look to be more splash reds. One thing I'm a 100% on is why they have 1/2 white hackles though, but they are for sure splash patterned birds.


think you'll have some nice ones once they molt though.... for sure at $3 each you did REAL good congrats

The hackles could be partially splashed due to the presence of a melanizer.. Ever get a duckwing with dark hackle tips or black caps? These melanizers are effecting the tips of the feathers and when you add a double dose of blue (splash) you get those melanized areas turning splash (looks white).. Color the bird black where it is splash and you will see what I am talking about.. Like the variations in the black shuberts.. You get varrying degrees of black hackling in the roosters..

All in all, they look like a fun group to work with.. Should be able to get CLEAN splash red duckwings from them and for $3 each, they were a steal!

haha, yep I never even bother sexing til they start getting good feathering in. The very first feathering straight from chick down can often be deceiving ... yes if it's not a Salmon colors breast it's not a girl. The males are pretty much black and white.
The hens a more silvery grey with the salmon breast. If the breast is turning solid black, it's a boy... now some girls will still have a speckle or two of black in them, but that's usually on cockerel feathered hens.... Do you have a pics you could post of them?

Ahaha it's the same bird...
This is why I am confused.
He's silver, but when you lift up his feathers they are brown underneath....

He's super white... the camera does not do me any justice...
I love this guy, he's a beauty

I'll go take some here in a little bit for you. Judging from the comb though (plus the black starting to come in) it's a boy. Very odd though because the rest of their feathering is identical. Silver Duckwing pullet coloring all over both except for those chest feathers and red comb. I'll let you be the judge as soon as I get pics.
 
Alright, here's the pictures of my 2 Phoenix. I swear this guy's comb looked identical to his sister's a week ago. And they just started getting those chest feathers, they're like 2 months old.
He's a boy, isn't he? I don't even need anyone to tell me that when I look at these pictures lol But their backs are identical. Such sweet little things. It's just rude how he disguised himself until I was in love with them both
