I do Same thing, there is a good article in exhibition poultry I think its this months issue (on line free) about raising large heritage breeds and they first lay down the bones and the requires vits, minerals and protiens, then the muscle, then later on the bulk muscle and feathers for the adult frame..it was telling dont be too quick to cull especially the slow growers like orps...the only thing is, later on when the bird gets older you have to be a bit careful about what kinds of protiens you feed because beleive it or not Chickens can get the gout just like people..with the orps, if you give vitamin B2 from hatch time just a little extra, that helps make toes nice and straight.(bread treats if nothing else in small bits are fortified with B2) .xtra protien makes for super nice shiney feathers for show too..An APA Judge told me last week that wheat makes a molting bird feather out faster..first I had ever heard that..I learn something new every day..
