Preparing to set call and pekin duck eggs! Hatch day should be March 4, 2021 if all goes well!

If I don't help my call ducklings at hatch then they die.
I just tried to again to see if I could get one to hatch on its own but it died, so I assisted the rest. I don't take the risk after waiting almost a month for them to hatch.
I noticed this with mine. All the ones in the incubator do not attempt to externally pip for me or unzip. I’ve had to do full assists on all of those. The ones under my broodies do good though. :hmm

This time is different though. It was approaching 24 hrs since internal pip for Squeegee’s eggs so I gave them safety holes. They have not made their own external pip. How should I go about assisting if they don’t progress and it’s necessary? I’ve never done any under my broodies.

Are the eggs under Call duck hens? @WVduckchick said that her call Ducks assists with the hatch

I haven't assisted with broodies. I don't know what to do exactly.
Can you give her some chicken eggs, hatch the calls in your incubator and then after they hatch give them back to her at night?

My one that's externally pipped, should I still go ahead and make a safety hole so it doesn't block it's pip and suffocate if it starts to zip? The parent stock that these eggs came from do have short necks and bills.
I would. I can only say what I would do. I had a couple hatch before on their own but they had longer beaks.
I lost a whole batch in the beginning, now I try to candle every day after 23 days to watch for the internal pip to give the safety holes.

Thanks for the great advice. That sounds like a good idea. I might definitely do this. :)

At Day 25, I have 6 eggs left. One of them hasn't internally pipped yet but I can see the duckling moving around in the egg. I didn't make a safety hole for that one yet. The other 5 have internally pipped and one has externally pipped. I made a tiny safety hole in each of the eggs. Now to wait and keep an eye on them. It's almost 1:30am so I'm going to try to get some sleep. Any suggestions on what to do with the 6th egg? Just keep an eye on it to internally pip and then proceed with the safety hole?
