PROBIOTICS for you and your chickens

I always put the cold, refrigerated milk in the microwave just barely long enough to get the chill off of it, just barely warm, before I pour it over the grains.

Joe,
Milk wasn't the problem, but buttermilk. The microwave kills the cultures in the cultured buttermilk. Warming gently on the stove will preserve the viability of your culture.
Ginny

Yes, I understood that, and I agree. I would never nuke kefir or buttermilk. I just barely heat plain cold milk, probably unnecessarily, but...

Yeah, I would nuke plain milk. I do warm up oatmeal in the microwave for them.

When my microwave finally goes I will not replace it. I would just as soon use the old fashioned way, stove top

When water used to be treated with chlorine, people did say to leave it sit out, to dissipate the chlorine. Most water treatment plants have gone to using chloramine, because it's a more stable compound. For chloramine treated water, people do have to use conditioners for their fish. I wouldn't use chloramine treated water for culturing. That's my understanding, anyway.

Stainless steel is not as reactive as other metals, like aluminum. That's why you never cook acidic foods like tomatoes in an aluminum pot, but you can cook them in a stainless steel pot.

This is a very interesting thread!

OMG, Miss Lydia, you're as bad as my daughter. Anne and I are visiting her here in St. Augustine, and she will not have a microwave oven. I almost go whacko wondering how I'm going to reheat my cup of coffee.

HOLY MOLEY, WOODLANDWOMAN, THANKS! I HOPE EVERYONE READS YOUR POST. PERSONALLY I HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD OF CHLORAMINE BEFORE. AS SOON AS I GET HOME, I'M GOING TO CALL MY WATER COMPANY TO SEE IF THEY USE IT INSTEAD OF CHLORINE. IF THEY DO, I WILL NEVER USE IT FOR MAKING ANYTHING PROBIOTIC AGAIN.
I DID A GOOGLE SEARCH, AND BOILING AND LETTING THE TAP WATER SIT OUT DOES NOT GET RID OF CHLORAMINE.

I am so thankful we have well & spring water. All the chemicals that are added to everything, we're embombed before we die good grief, I usually don't even have my microwave plugged in.

Microwaves suck the good right out of your food, the microwave was invented by the nazi's. Figures don't it!

I dont even use the microwave to heat the milk before culturing! I do it the old fashioned way I sit it out on the counter for about an hour and let it warm to room temperature before I add my cultures to it! I have a microwave but very seldom use it! I used to make scrambled eggs in it! Seems the deeper I get into trying to live a healthy lifestyle the longer the microwave sits Idle! I won't hardly use it to heat water anymore. I have a tea pot on the stove

That is why I started using Spring water in everything because I didn't like all the chemicals that they used to treat tap water (I didn't know about chloramine but will look that up and do a little more research! We quit using tap water about 5 years ago for anything but bathing or doing laundry! I don't cook with it or make coffee or tea with it! Whenever I turn the tap on at my house and am overtaken by the smell of chlorine and iodides I knew I didn't want for me or my animals ingest it! Dogs and cats in the house only get spring water in their bowls and Chickies only get filtered rain water from my cistern that runs thru a filter! I now filter the tap water that comes into the house but still won't drink it
