Prolapse

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. My Buff Orp has a prolapse. She laid yesterday, late in the day and has been trying to lay again all morning. So I went to check her out and she has a little prolapse which has now turned into a slightly larger prolapse. I washed off her bum with disinfectant, pushed it back and then applied Sudafed. Went I went to check her again a little later it was still prolapsed. I am a little concerned as to how hard to push it back inside?? Has she got another egg to come out or, if there is one, will it re-absorb? I will check her again shortly but if there is anyone on-line at the moment would greatly appreciate some advice please. Also, my book says to give one teaspoonful of olive oil every day for a few days to prevent her trying to lay for the time being. Any advice on this? Thanks in advance from a very worried chookie mummy!

Pictures may help. I would use honey or Preparation H inside and outside the vent to reduce swelling. Keep trying to push it back inside, and if you can get it in, hold it in for several minutes. The longer the tissue is outside, it can dry out and become necrotic. If she is inside where it is warm, you can soak her vent in warm epsom salts to soothe her and keep the vent clean. You also can insert a gloved finger inside the vent to check for an egg. A dose of calcium (calcium tablet, Tums, liquid calcium) may help if she is egg bound. Place her in darkness for 16 hours a day to help stop her laying. Sometimes if the prolapse becomes worse or the tissue is dead, they can't always be saved. Here is a link or two to read:

Thank you so much Eggcessive. Links were brilliant and looking at them it seems my chookie prolapse is not too bad. I have checked her again and it has stayed in. Will be out again shortly to check her again. Got to buy some more 'stuff' to put in my ever increasing medical kit! Those links were really helpful, thanks again.

Haven't learnt how to post pictures yet. Must get round to that. Anyway, I am pleased to report that we haven't had a prolapse now for four days. Hoping this is going to last. I have been giving 1tsp olive oil every day for about 6 days now, but this hasn't prevented her (Bea) from laying. Perhaps it is helping her lay? I think the problem has been resolved up until now with Preparation H, and bathing in warm Epson salts water, plus a good layer of Sudacrem when she looked red around the vent. Thanks everyone who has given me so many tips and advice - particularly on my other thread 'Blocked'.
