We are new to chickens, in other words, shamefully ignorant and not enough educated. One of my chickens had something disgusting hanging from her vent. Immediately I cleaned her and removed it. THEN I googled. Sounds like I just removed her oviduct. And everything online is saying my other chickens are going to try to eat her. The only information I can find it on putting it back in. Well, it’s already removed. So now please, what do I do to prevent her from suffering?

Sounds like you got bad information. Getting good information will be the best way to prevent suffering on the part of the hen and the keeper.

Please tell us what age is your layer, what is her behavior before the removal of the "foreign tissue" and since?

Is she alert or lethargic, able to stand, eating and drinking, pooping, etc?

Sounds to me like possibly an under developed egg/ or membrane of such and not an uncommon new layer hiccup or sometimes entering into or returning from molt as the reproductive system comes back on line or shuts down and/ or synchronizes all it's parts.

Here are some photos. It’s frightening.

She was fine all day but then distant and still, tired, tail down when we noticed her. She’s less than two years. Now it’s bedtime so she’s roosting, but her other chickens are kind of hovering over her. Very protective-like. She seems pretty normal.
