Pullet or Cockerel? Ameraucana.....It's official/Got a new name :)

If it's a year old and still looks just like those last pics you posted I am gonna say female, because at a year you would see tons of saddle feathers!

New pics?

Orps are brown egg layers, not white. If you breed a white egg laying breed w/ a brown egg layer, you get brown egg layers. (brown is a dom trait=look up genetics in chickens) http://thesmallfarm.blogspot.com/2010/02/poultry-genetics-breeding-for-egg-color.html My Leghorn has white lobes so he can't be orp. Like I said before, my roos legs and "toes" are yellow. I took this pic as the sun was coming up. As for his tail, he had a hard life early on, fending for himself w/ no shelter so he is still growing back his feathers on his tail. He and all his mates were Leghorns, at least the ones that didn't get eaten by fox. He also had a bad case of lice when I got him in the summer. Once again, this thread isn't about my chickens.

Buff Leghorns are solid buff. No white, no reddish coloring on the wings - A solid golden coloring. I have the APA Standard of Perfection, trust me.

A buff cockerel should actually have the darker coloring on his neck and tail, not his shoulders. His legs look pink and white in the photo though, so I said what I saw.

Also, a common known thing is that if the bird does indeed have muffs and beard and lays blue eggs but is not a recognized color or has the right leg color, it is very well known as the "Easter Egger," a breed commonly but falsely sold as an "Ameraucana," but in fact is a crossbred with little to no Ameraucana behind it.

Still, very nice birds and just as equaled in value, but not the same. Yes I agree it is not the point, but a helpful point of this section is identifying breeds too.

Ok, so if he isn't a Leghorn, then tell me, what is he? There is no way he has orf blood or his lobes would be red. In all the reading I have done, and pics of buff leghorns I have seen, it looks just like him. I don't argue that my AM isn't a true AM because most are not true AM's unless they have been DNA tested. Do you call a Band-aid a band-aid or a sterile bandage. Or do you ask for a kleenex or a facial tissue.

I stick with my original guess. HEN not roo.

Buff Leghorns do not have pink legs. Buff Minorcas do......I agree with the colors what Illia said, its too washy of a color. Like you also said, it could be the photographs taken in the day. Once you have sunshine, take a pic of him again with your back to the sun so the roo can have the "full" color in view for us to see.

I do not know about the Leghorn combs but the ones I've had and what other people have, were not as "beefy" as your roo. The Minorcas do. He got one odd looking comb too LOL! Like a hat with a feather sticking out of it.

McMurray has them and it is not unusual for them to add Buff Minorcas and Buff Leghorns in the lot to fill up one of the breed slot.

Perhaps NYReds and another judge in here will probably can tell you more about the Buff Leghorns and Buff Minorcas.

I will have to look into the Buff Minorca thing. I have a black minorca hen and everyone thinks she is a roo because of her big comb. Great idea I will check into that. I just went out and inspected his legs closer and they do have a pinkish yellow color. He does have an impresive comb....looks like a red blown-up latex glove on his head.

I am looking into more chickens....does anyone have a hatchery they use the sells 100% purebreds?

Well after almost 9 months the truth comes out.

SIL and 2 of the grandsons came over to put shelves up in my garage today.

The kids were so excited when the birds come running hoping for treats.

I heard the crow. I didn't think it was from where I heard it. It was.

I'll be needing a new name for Bonnie.

I have to tell you people something I've known all along.

If Illa comes in and tells you the sex of your bird, just set up for what it is.

Was actually prayer she was wrong this time, but alas....................I've never seen her wrong .......ever!

So I need some name suggestions and oh.............I need 2 new blue hens to make up for my heartbreak!

So if anyone has a couple of hens somewhere close I need some nice ones. POLs are fine too.

I have to make sure I have a Bonnie to name after my mom.

OK, gonna go check on my boy now.......
