well I am staying out of this battle of the sexes but I was thinking pullet as well..... but I mean if "it" hatched in April you should know whether it is a hen or a roo.... of course if the weather is quite cold there you may not get an egg. All my girls have stopped laying in the cold weather here. She may not lay an egg till it warms up... but if there is no crow that is a good sign.

I haven't seen an egg out of anyone here since August.

My yard looked like a huge pillow fight had gone on. Naked Marans and Silkies and the young ones still haven't started up at all. I've checked for lice and mites and they've all been wormed, so must be the weird weather and still recouping from moult.

I'll try to get a pick tomorrow morning, but still looks the same. I thought I saw saddle feathers, but I'm taking a pic of her tail area again tomorrow and see if anyone else can tell.

Man I really am blind.

OH and my Marans roos the same age same hatch very seldom crow. They did when they were younger, but they're pretty quiet now. Not pushing that at all! LOL

Here are some pics of one of my AM hens and my leghorn roo. Granted they are a different breed but there is still a huge difference between the two. Size, feathers, spurs. I thought this AM was a roo for a long time because of her feather characteristics but then she popped out an egg. She has stopped laying for the winter so I wouldn't use the lack of egg laying as a reason yours is a roo. If your AM is a year old it should have crowed by now. Unlike a hen, a roo won't stop or not crow because of the winter. A hen will stop or slow laying because of the winter. I have 1 hen that still hasn't laid her first egg because she started her molt right around the time that she was suppose to start laying and then it got cold and dark. She will also be a year in April. Note the spurs on my roo. He is 1.5 years old and my AM will be 1 yr in April. Your AM looks just like my AM, just a different color. Hope this helps.

Those aren't Ameraucanas. They're Easter Eggers.

Also the "Leghorn" isn't a Leghorn either, wrong color of legs and there is no Leghorn in that color. Sorry.

I'm betting rooster as well...With mine, I couldn't tell for sure until they were at least 8 months old...Only noticed because they started crowing! They started looking rooster-ish around a year old, and the hen didn't start laying until a little after a year old...Too bad my flock got killed

They are definitely my favorite breed!

It is called Buff and it is a leghorn...sorry. http://www.amerpoultryassn.com His legs are yellow...what color are they supposed to be? The pics were taken early morning so the pics don't show true color. As far as the AM/Easter egger, it is what it is. She was sold as an AM, has puffy muffs & beard and lays blue eggs....I will let you tell her she is a mutt. That isn't the point of this thread anyway.

I still say it isn't a roo.

I have to agree with Illia. The roo, and the hens are mixed. EE's are usually sold as AM's by people who don't know the difference. Sometimes, it's intentional to get more money out of them. Sometimes, it's not purposeful.

Buff leghorns are accepted, but I'm pretty sure that bird isn't a pure leghorn. A mix, but not pure. I've never seen a pure leghorn that beefy, with a tail that small. And his feet are pink in the photos, which is typical of a Orpington.
