My flock was attacked by a hawk yesterday. One, who was moulting on the lower back, has a puncture wound in the bare area. We cleaned it and put some antibacterial ointment on it then sprayed with blue-kote to prevent the others from pecking her. It was not gushing blood, it was just a little bloody. Any suggestions?

How deep is the puncture? You want to be sure it doesn't heal over at skin level while brewing a nasty infection underneath....Hopefully the Blu-Kote got all the way to the bottom of the puncture and will help. I would re-apply daily and try to keep her from dust bathing, at least if she does that like my birds, she'll cover herself in filthy dirt from the floor of the run. Filthy from the standpoint of an open wound, that is - I'm sure you keep your chickens as clean as possible! But even a clean chicken coop is pretty darn dirty!

Good luck, hope someone with more specific experience will have more suggestions for you.
