Quail Hatch-a-long

Hopefully it'll have some friends soon. I had a Button hatch much earlier than the rest so I gave it a mirror for company. Once it had some friends I took the mirror out - you should've heard the protest! It was so funny - so I had to put the mirror back in. They did rather like looking at themselves.

Do you find they do just fine in such a big group in a brooder or do you split them into smaller batches to brood? That's a lot of babies! I think 28 is the most I've ever had at one time!

I don't split them up. They do fine in large groups.

1 of my brooders is an 8 ft water tank. I sorta go overboard on hatching during certain times of the year. Lol

Nothing yet... I'' trying to hold on to hope today at about 4 will officially be day 21 so maybe tonight something will happen.

I would candle them and see what's happening. If the embryo has died it looks very black and lumpy and there will be a clear line of liquid between it and the bottom of the air cell with no veins visible. If the embryo is still alive you may see the membrane moving at the higher end of the air cell (where it's closer to the fat end of the egg) - maybe just on either side of that. That's the chick getting ready to pip internally. You'll see their shadow beak in the air cell if they have pipped internally. :fl

My early hatcher is not alone.

The eggs on each side his hatched so he has 2 little friends now.

See a few more pipped.

Last year when I hatched these had 2 out at 9 o clock didn' see any pips. Got woke up at 12 and had almost 60 hatched.

Hoping they come like popcorn. Just like last hatch

A few that hatched today

I see a few small pieces of shell on the paper towel today but the hole is not in view! My puppy heard me excited and ran right into the stand so I watched in horror as all the eggs shifted a few times. I'm not hearing a constant peep or any loud peeping but my mom and I are both hearing light peeping!!!
