My Australorp just started crowing at 16 weeks. I haven't heard him crow more than twice a day since then. Not all that loud. Just very deep and booming-like.
well...yup...there is an operation...costs more than the bird is worth but they are silent..mostly...about the same as the one to cut the cords so a dog can't bark...most claim it as cruelty but I guess it is up to the owner in all reality. fairly hard to find a vet that is willing to mess with a bird though
my banty rooster is about 4 months old now.. and has never crowed that i've noticed.. i was reading once that bantams in general are quieter than the rest.... and bantam roos are ssoo darn cute...
this is ironman
I have a very quiet Partridge Rock roo.....rarely crows and when he does it is very muted. One would have to strain to hear him crowing while he is in the coop. He is over a year old and very gentle and smart. I hope he lives good and long here.
Yeah, you need to tell my Silkie Roo, too. He crows continuously once he starts. (A habit he picked up from an older roo that I sold w/ a pair of hens.) Usually, he'll crow for about an hour.
I have a cockrel that hasn't started to crow & I'm hoping he doesn't pick up that habit. (knock on wood!)
My Delaware Blue Hen roosters only crow early in the morning, and it is pretty quiet. Muted, unlike my EE, Golden Comet, SLW and bantam Golden Sebright roos were. Those guys woke up the county!
ETA, I just reread- if your neighbors are really close and you value their friendship? Don't get a roo!
