A common stimulus for crowing is hearing another rooster at a
distance. Its a bit like dogs barking on a moonlit night. If your rooster
doesn't crow much, it could be because he doesn't feel he has any
competition.
The people who claim that their rooster's aren't very loud remind me
of a joke:
This older lady goes to her doctor. She tells him she has a little
problem, but doesn't think its really worth troubling her doctor over.
She hesitantly tells him she farts a lot. But they don't make any
noise and they don't smell, so it can't be much of a problem.
The doctor says well first lets send you to some specialists and get
your hearing and your nose checked!
Some neighbors have a bantam rooster, and i can here him plainly a
quarter mile away.
Wouldn't it make sense to breed a strain that wouldn't crow?
Start with ones that crow the least and save out the ones that crow
even less. If they crow, its into the pot. After a few generations it
ought to be possible to have a
good suburban citizen! It would seem to be a good seller. Something like
"No Crow Orpingtons".
I remember years ago, Vermont had a Buck only hunting season
When they first added a doe season, there were quite a few
antlerless bucks. It was a survival trait to not have antlers! Not
crowing would be a good Suburban Survival trait for a rooster as
well as a selling point for a hatchery.
