Quiet Roosters???

I thought "quiet rooster" was an oxymoron...like mutually exclusive or military intelligence?

I will look into a Buff Orington Rooster and let you all know if mine is quiet also. Presently, I have one rooster(RIR), two RIR hens and three Leghorn hens. The rooster never shuts up. He crows all day long and attacks me on a regular basis. We have dueled it out several times. I got his feathers raised, but I think I established myself as the top of the pecking order, at least I think I am.

I have a white silkie banty that is near 7 months old and doesn't crow. My other two (RIR and OEGB) crow all the time. I'm still hoping he is a she

Thanks everyone..my FBCM boys were exceedingly loud and crowed all day/night. My quietest truned out to be a Black Ameraucauna but sadly, I was forced to sell the flock lock, stock and barrel this Winter :-(

Well, can't believe nobody mentioned LF cochins (unless my flock is an unusual one)...none of my cochin roos crow...they garble, and growl and make all kinds of funny, low pitched noises...but no crowing!!! They are very friendly and wonderful roos too!

My LF cochin was very loud. crowed at 4am and at noon. he was the loudest roo ive had. had to give him away he wwas so loud

When I was researching some breeds that were available I came across this on Wiki:

"Cochins are quiet chickens. They scarcely crow or cluck, only when laying eggs."

I wound up acquiring a RIR/leghorn cross with a bunch of RIRs that I bought, and he can be pretty noisy! I think I'll try find me a cochin rooster and send Bricktop to the stewpot.

Hey, I'm a Vet in OK and do this procedure. I have had very good success with it. There is a thread on here about decrowing roosters. There seems to be alot of misconception concerning this procedure. I'd like to here some more opinions. Thanks.
