Raerest breed

Pics
Egyptian Fayoumis are rare, but they are not APA recognized unfortunately (I wish they were!). Most people seem to get them as free rare chicks.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lakenvelder meat caught on. They are shaped just like a game bird and are delicious (and have blue legs)

If you want to get the Fayoumis recognized, try taking them to some of the shows, entering them in one of the "other" categories. Our local 4H shows have separate, generalized classes for feather-legged and clean-legged birds in both standard and bantam sizes. Fayoumis are unique enough to really appeal to kids, and independent (and low maintenance) enough to appeal to parents who don't want to get stuck taking care of Junior's chickens.
They might just catch on!

Well as much as I am tempted to give the dog a knockout after it kills a $500 bird I rather bring it to its owner and confront the guilty party in question.
Yeah that's a good point but for me personally I'd rather shoot the mut than letting it live after all they're no reason why someone should have there dog on ur property
Maybe it's different in ur country but where I live I know the law can't touch u for killing an animal that's not endangered if u have a liecense

I'm looking to see who here has the rarest birds or who knows what the rarest chicken is
Thanx for any info u can give me

Hey Everybody Following This Thread - I found a 2015 Poultry Census on the LC website. Now, I know it's probably not the end-all/be-all of conservation lists, but it's an interesting jumping-off point. I found the chart near the end of the write up really scary. It not only shows the number of birds the census found, but breaks each breed down into how many are in hatcheries and how many are in the hands of private breeders ... like us!

I'm thinking that, if you want to keep an unusual or hard to find bird ... this would be a good place to start your search list ...
Whaddaya think?

:drool I've seen like two pictures and he's gorgeous.

Yeah I've heard the more rare chickens are the less work is put into them so they are weaker. John Sullivan I believe owns Buckeyes and they are extremely disease resistant while the La Fleche he has, a breed that needs a more help, you go so much to sneeze in their direction and they've got something.
Not true about La Fleche. The breed lives longer than a lot of breeds. I sent a La Fleche Cockerel and pullet to an long time breeder in Maine awhile back whose 14 year old La Fleche rooster had recently passed. His youngest hen was 8 years old. How many chickens you have that live that long? It is true that bantam buckeyes are some of the hardiest birds around, even hardier than the LF Buckeyes. La Fleche are no less hardy than other Large Fowl breeds. My oldest LF Buckeye is a 10 year old hen but she is the exception. Mist die around 7 or 8 years.

Oh. Interesting. I thought I heard that they get sick pretty easily, but of course don't have any personal experience.
