Raising Baby Chick-Along

Pics
:clap congrats.
I have a Fiona too. Sister is Felicia. :)
And you think those are small, try some seramas. They definitely take a dozen to make a decent meal. :D
Thanks! We are pretty proud of her mini eggs...however she was not a fan of us taking them..LOL

HEY...where are you taking MY egg????:lau

Well, Lucy's babies and a dozen more barnyard...oops, I mean "unique" mix eggs went to a very nice lady today. Lucy promptly returned to the barn and took up residence on some eggs in a nesting box. What? I don't even know if it's healthy for them to brood two batches in a row. She looks terrible - very dirty - and pale. Hmm. I'm hoping after being kicked off a few times, maybe she will stop...

Here's a pic of the babies that left today.

So we had a near catastrophe today. My neighbors dog got ahold of Tara (lone golden comet, 2-year old hen). Luckily, if there was any luck, the dogs are Brittany spaniels, so they are trained to retrieve quail and not kill. The dog delivered Tara to my neighbor, and dropped her at his feet. She looked up at him and he said she looked like she wanted to say "what the <bleep> is wrong with your dog?"

He ripped out a few tail feathers and she has a small bite wound on her back end, but i think she will be fine. Maybe a little traumatized for a couple days, but maybe this will keep her in my yard. She hid under his flatbed trailer all day, he took her food and water, but she followed me home when i got home. We aren't sure exactly where the dog caught her (who's property) but the neighbor said Tara usually isn't out as early as she was today, and he didn't see her until he had already turned out his dogs. I don't blame the dog for doing as it was trained, and she was out where she didn't belong, but I'm sure he will watch for her more closely from now on.

Whew!
Whew!! I am so glad Tara was just "retrieved" and not "played with" like most dogs will do! Poor girl though - probably saw her 1/3 of a life passing before her eyes in the maws of the beast!

My chicks are slowly getting used to me. I have been sitting on a stool by the brooder and picking them up and petting them.
Today i made a feeder, it just needs the small front board attached since the paint was wet. And i started on the run assembly and hardware cloth on the bottom of one is done. 20170826_185309.jpg 20170826_185555.jpg

Unique yes! ;)
I won't take chicks from a momma that early anymore. Did it once and she went back to sitting about a week later. But then again, i may rethink that since my cochin sisters chicks all appear to be males. All 5! How does that happen???!! :he I may have to see how a bantam cochin processes out. :(

Thanks. She still seems to be in shock, kept her inside last night and all day today (in a baby brooder cage, eww, big chick poo is so much stinkier than little chick poo!) I'm hoping she'll be closer to her normal self tomorrow. :fl

Poor Tara! Hope she is starting to relax! Guess she MAY be a bit less adventurous now?
Lately, we've had cool mornings and evening--but it does get pretty warm mid afternoon. I went out about noon to check on the new kids and they were all sleeping on their perches in the new shelter. I now think they approve.:wee
Awwww...happy babies!!!!

Well, Tara passed away peacefully this morning. I couldn't do a necropsy, but i did check inside her vent and i have a feeling that the dog crushed an egg inside her. :(

She will be missed. RIP dear Tara.

A couple of the last pics i took of her. The one is on the arm of my chair, the night of the attack.
