I'm very curious as to what some of those look like so I'm going look them up a bit later.

I've seen quite a few merle ones in the Facebook groups in the past few years. They aren't an allowed color but I guess people can't help themselves.Oo, that's quite a lot

I've heard of people breeding merle Tenties these days and it bugs me honestly. We have beautiful colours within the TT's already, I actually own two ANKC unrecognized coloured ones. People could be focusing on developing them instead of out crossing for MerleI've seen quite a few merle ones in the Facebook groups in the past few years. Merle apparently sells. I like it in the breeds it belongs in, but am tired of it being added to every other breed without a thought about the health concerns that comes with it.I've heard of people breeding merle Tenties these days and it bugs me honestly. Yep, that was my first thought too. Tenties have enough genetic things that should be properly sorted out before even thinking about adding something elseMerle apparently sells. Rat terriers are generally healthy long lived dogs. The studbook was only recently closed, so there is still some amount of different genetics in the breed which helps.Yep, that was my first thought too. I love the normal colours for my breed, I have/want to own all the colours but seriously merle's not going to make the list I don't think...
Tenties are unfortunately not really common enough, imo. I can trace all the ones me and my family owns to being related at some point cause we've had to stick to a few lines to keep away from things like LCPD. But then there's issues when you start outcrossing to things like mini foxies cause you start losing the tentie almost.Rat terriers are generally healthy long lived dogs. Unfortunately the AKC has already messed with the breed. There used to be type A and type B rat terriers, but now there's rat terrier, and teddy Roosevelt terriers, which are a short legged version. Unfortunately they also look bigger boned than the type B rat terrier did.
It can definitely be hard. My family used to breed and I'm the one who gets our breeder prefix whenever/if ever I want it. There's been a lot of law changes in regards to breeding here though which I haven't even begun to look into.I almost became a rat terrier breeder, but knew I would have problems letting pups go. They are one of my favorite breeds.
Rat terrier are similar to border collies in that both are bred for function over form. Used to be every farm had some sort of herding dog, and some sort of ratter. Dog were bred by their working skills, so the breed was very diverse. They are becoming more rare.Tenties are unfortunately not really common enough, imo. The rat terrier sounds like a really interesting breed to me. I'm very partial to a lot of terrier breeds. They're all so unique. It's a shame when they start losing what they're supposed to be. I used to show my tenties and my girls would often be against these TINY little things... I don't know why breeders seemed to be choosing and breeding the little ones when they're not supposed to be small.
