YES! ! !
Don't use lye/Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) ! It's dangerous for you and everything living and not living around you (will mar any flooring it sits on as it absorbs moisture). Not an anti-coagulant... it causes severe burns on contact! Besides Red Devil doesn't even have pure lye on the shelves anymore... took it off the market a few years ago. (Talked to them at the time.) I am a soap maker and use lye all the time, so it is something I'm very familiar with.

Has anyone ever tried using dry rice and water on the side... they eat it, causing thirst and drink the water... swells and they can't belch so they bloat and die. (Never used this method but have heard of it) But, again, you still have a dead rat rotting somewhere.

Yea, Still got my fingers. Still got a rat running around too... If the snow clears today I need to get chicken feed. While there I may look around... I remember seeing claw bear trap type deals there....

the brand I use is not red devil but it is lye Lowes home centers sells it it is really good at cleaning rusty metal as well

when the shortage of lye first started I boiled hardwood ashes to produce my own it works just as well the higher an egg floats in it the stronger the solution is and plumbers throw it down the water course on a daily basis as well as homeowners the pennies under the spring kills most of the rats here

My husband made a tube of hardware cloth with a wire end and removed the dryer vent baffle and put the wire in it. have not had rats since.
Big barrel with a board just long enough for the board to balance, they go for the bait at the end and they fall in with the board. The board has to be short enough not to climb out of the barrel. I imagine if you put water in the bottom, they could not jump out either, because they can't push off.

I have not watched the chick cam for fear of rat attacks, so please let us know when you get him/her/it.

My house is old an "ratty" so the dryer vent is not going to fix much. My house is well ventilated lol.

Yall lost me with all that lye, water, wood, dry ice stuff. I know nothing about chemistry.

I wouldn't mind learning to make lye soap so I can make some catfish soap though.

I hope I have the issue with the incubator covered. This rat is to big to fit threw the vent holes... I may cover them with hardware cloth to though.

I suggest that you go to the most natural enemy of mice & rats for help; get a Jack Russell Terrier! These dogs just adore the hunt. They won't stop until they get the varmint. My two Jacks will dig in frozen, muddy slush after field mice. They will be digging down past their front shoulders, completely covered in mud & ice!

Set the trap in the middle of the floor, since it sounds like you have seen him in the open he will come out again. When you catch him, be ready with a nice heavey well balanced frying pan, as soon as the trap closes, LEAP over and BEAT THE HELL OUT OF HIM REPEATEDLY, it the only humane way to kill a rat.
