Rattler!! New pics, nother snake pg 3

You need some guinea fowl. That's what people out here use to keep the rattlers down. I saw one just outside our gate about a month ago. Now I have some guineas, too. Mine are still in the brooder, tho.

That is an Atrox horridus, or a canebreak, AKA timber, rattlesnake.
They are Protected almost everywhere, as habitat destruction really takes its toll on them.
Be careful, but don't kill.

Don't kill? Maybe if I'm far away in the woods on a hike or hunting...but if I see that in my backyard. That picture would be of a headless rattler. I've got family (children and all their friends) and a dog that I sure wouldn't want to step on that.

Wish I still had a picture. I had a Timber Rattler that was about 5' long laying cross my path. Scared the snot out of me. Like my brain was sending me signals of something dangerous so I stopped and for the first 30 seconds or so my eyes were trying to figure out what was wrong with the leaves. Finally I made out the snake. Sucker never rattled at me.

Ooh...that picture just gave me the creeps. I have a little girl and if I ever saw one of those by her, protected or now, I would have to choose my daughter. Then I'd call the police department, which is unfortunately only a part-time police force.

The king snakes around here are doing a good job of keeping the rattlesnake population down now, but about 6 years ago this place was literally crawling with them.

I haven't seen any in the past few years, but king snakes do stretch out to sun in my front yard.
