I may have started the off topic posts and for that I apologize to the OP but you must realize this whole thread has been off topic including the bickering you spoke of.
Sometimes people miss posts as in Casprtponys case where she is on a small phone. I have missed whole pages by hitting the wrong button. Its human nature to want to help. Well, for most of us anyway. As pack animals, we want to belong and for myself being made to feel like what I said was blather really hurts.

I wasn't speaking directly of you in particular.
'Blather' is defined as I meant it ...off topic jokes bantering that goes on and on and has nothing to do with thread topic.
I want to help also.

My question is do you know someone that posted a question on BYC and didn't get a reasonable answer? If the situation is that people get their answers /solution the chatting and bubbling is a small price. .....

In my opinion the threads are like a conversation between multiple freinds, with its dynamic and its evolution.
The type of hypothetical thread mentioned here whould be like a discussion with your Doctor or lawyer ,purposeful and short. Don't see it happens.

It's not hypothetical. It happened several times last week, which prompted this thread to begin with.

Here's what happened.... Someone started a thread asking for help. Whether it was with hatching, an injured bird, a sick bird, all these happened. The threads turned chatty, which is fine. That's not my point. My point is that even after the death, or the hatch was over, or the bird was cured, or whatever the result happened to be, there were extra comments about what the OP should do! The dead ones are especially hard, when i read of a birds death, then someone pipes in with "well, you could try this"! They obviously want to help, but they've missed the boat.

Good points.
I see forums first as a source of information from experienced people,
no matter the area of expertise...socializing is included, but separate.
Like school, you learn in the classroom, chat and cut up in the lunch room or on the playground....some folks need detention for disrupting the classroom!!

We all need to learn, to socialize, and to visit the doctor or lawyer.
Compartmentalization, time and place for everything, is not that difficult.

Hey @Nifty-Chicken .....can we you or staff 'feature' this thread to spread the word?
Might get more people thinking about forum etiquette.

I think for now it's got some good legs and we're having a really good discussion with the people that are most likely going to be interested in it... and others will still find it. I think it's a bit scattered and off-topic (from chickens) for about 85% of the visitors to the site.

As an OP on a thread I would like the power to edit threads as I see fit. Remove posts that I don't find on topic or helpful.

Unfortunately, this just isn't something that would work. It would cause a TON of issues with people who would become upset about the manner in which their posts were being handled.

Again, lots of great comments and suggestions here. We're not going to be able to solve these issues any time soon (I think a cure for cancer will be discovered before a solution to human interactions ), but I'm VERY optimistic that through reviewing these ideas, implementing them, helping guide others by example and kind replies, we'll be able to see some great progress!!!

"Solved" is added by the moderator, or by the op? Or is the op granted moderation tools to make the final decision that the post is correct and closed for further input?

By the OP, and it's just a tag added to the title, the thread isn't closed. It has value for those looking to help, because they can immediately see that the OP has got his/her answer. Anyone with a similar problem or with additional/useful information can still post if they want to.

No forum ever allows that, only admins or mods can edit or remove other posters' content. You can only ever edit your own posts. Some lock you out of editing the first post after there have been replies. An OP who deletes the first post obviously destroys the thread.

@WVduckchick, @BantyChooks, @staceyj, @21hens-incharge, @potato chip all mentioned the OP being able to edited the thread in some way. Either delete posts, move the thread, or add a notes section.

I don't think any user can move threads-if they want to go off on a tangent, they can start a new thread elsewhere. I've never seen any notes section, but I don't think it should ever be necessary to try to extract information from the forum because it's buried in 'chat'.

@Crooked Chicken mentined a pop up that when someone would go to respond at the OPs request the thread stay on topic would come up as a friendly reminder. I like this idea! It would require people following it though. Again with human nature.

I would find it annoying. It shouldn't be hard for people to modify their behaviour and not post pointless replies.

@potato chip also brought up repeat answers one right after another. I've had this happen, as I'm typing someone else responds. Then there are two answers right in a row. In an emergency situation it's nice to hear others agree. I've commented "agreed" or "X2" as a reassurance to the OP that the advice they have received is good advice.

Sure, that's not a problem. It's when somebody comes in and pipes up with something that's been said earlier in the thread, sometimes many times, by many different posters. Sometimes, it's not even in a long thread and it's obvious that the poster hasn't bothered reading anything anyone else has posted. (again, not necessarily on this forum, but it happens relatively frequently.) Some people see forums more as QandA and don't bother with reading other replies at all.

But if attention is drawn to it and the OP or the rules or whatever say it's not AOK, then that should be different.
