Do you have a retriever?

Love Chessies, have had three, all now gone, sadly. Don't get one if you can't be the 'totally in charge' person, or you will be run over...

I think thats for most retrievers and dogs a lot of people let their dogs get away with things and allow them to make that mistake again like counter surfing, accidents, etc.
If they are set up for sucess they will suceed. If you let a 8 week old puppy wander your house alone well things will get chewed up and there will be accidents.
 
Chessies, unlike many retrievers, are guard dogs, and do think more independently than many. Good traits for the right families, not so great if not managed. And dominant dogs do need to be managed!
Once out of control, it's difficult to convince an eighty or ninety pound dog to be a polite and respectful family member, and I've seen this play out (badly) a few times.
