Ribh's D'Coopage

Given my former occupation, I keep a close eye on all of this. I am saddened to hear that people are now starting to break into houses to steal food. I really don't think this world will ever return to what we think is normal. We will all have to adapt to a new normal. In this country, where we value our freedom so dearly, that will be the most important aspect to the "new normal" and I fear it could get really ugly if folks aren't allowed to exercise those freedoms once again. To be perfectly blunt... we will exercise those freedoms even if we have to take it away from those who would deny it.

I think people need to adjust their expectations; both seem very unlikely.
It seems from what I read on BYC people are expecting things to return to normal, whatever that subjective judgment entails. I'm not convinced there is any going back and if we avoid a war in all this we've had a result.

I’m just taking things a day at a time. I’m taking some leave so that should help.

Yes...& no. As always it's individuals who suffer. More people die from preventable diseases ~especially in the west. We have been here before. That we are so Eurocentric or American centric we forget the rest of the world is to our shame but that's people. We have a very me first mentality.

I’d heard that India had clamped down pretty hard in the beginning as they knew their health system wouldn’t cope. I don’t know how accurate that is or what their situation is currently. I think the wealthiest Western countries have been hit as badly as they have due the the individualistic attitude and the “I refuse to be inconvenienced” mentality. If the world changes, I would like to see it change so that people are more community-minded, but I bet it won’t. :(

Oh dear. I'm afraid I fall into the individualistic camp. I hate like poison anything that involves masses of people. I won't join the street community things ~ they eat & drink & gossip & frankly I have better things to do with my time. I do give away eggs & excess produce from the garden but I'm not a joiner. Such thinking, rightly or wrongly, always reminds me of Hitler & gives me the hee~bee~jeebies.

I don’t think that makes you individualistic. You not wanting to spend time with others isn’t being selfish and self-absorbed. I’m thinking of behaviours such as panic-buying, stupid behaviour on the road (because bad things only ever happen to other people, duh!), all the way to people preferring Government tax-cuts over the money being put towards health and education. Sorry, I didn’t mean to get on my soap-box, I’m just finding the older I get, the more angry that attitude makes me. I don’t blame you for not wanting to spend time with society! I’m going to now go and find a nice quiet cave...

Ah, well. The study of history gives perspective to things like this so I wasn't even remotely tempted to panic buy. I do believe in the greatest amount of individual freedom possible that doesn't impinge on the greater good. I will be interested to see how Sweden comes out of this. They've gone that route...

I think the days of cheap and easy international travel may be over. This may not be a bad thing imo. It's been lovely and quiet here. We are below the flight path for Barcelona and the lack of aircraft noise is very noticeable.
I've noticed a reduction too. I'm within sight of the international flight path with a little noise carrying over. Far, far fewer flights on that path.

I just had a thought... Imagine being so hungry you break into a house for food only to discover they don't have any either.
