Ribh's D'Coopage

Plus I'd have to do it with him. His mum's idea is he has toys so she doesn't have to engage... 🙄
I do believe that kids need to learn to amuse and entertain themselves, but that needs to be balanced with together time for mommy and kids.
Reading to children is valuable time for their minds. Kids who are read too are the best readers.
Even playing with toys is sometimes good to do together.

They're 2 & 4 so a bit young for that ~ & the thought of having either of them in a hot air balloon gives me conniptions! 😵 YD & I did consider taking the lad to one of the zoos for his birthday. We figured it was going to take both of us to hog tie him but either zoo is over an hour away & there was the question of car seats so it never happened.

I spent a disheartening hour or so going through the toy department of both Kmart & Target. I like either crafty/science experimenty things or things that have multiple uses ~ like paint ~ but the absolute JUNK is an insult to any right thinking child! In the end I opted for a kick board for the lad because apparently I will be babysitting him regularly over the summer & his father thinks swimming lessons are a good idea 🙄 & his sister got a beach set. Plus I got each of the grands an egg cup. I was hoping to find a kiddies cook book for the lad. He likes to cook & I had a number of really good ones when my kiddies were little but nope. :( And the ones I had got trashed they were used so much.

I did find a nice wooden picture memory game I can play with the lad but his concentration is that of a gnat; short. Very short.
And people shop for fun! :eek:They must be mad.

I don't think the first one is in print anymore but you may be able to source a second hand copy.

The step by step cookbook is very, very good with lots of photos and easy recipes, including scramble eggs!

Of course there is no way they could arrive in time for Christmas this year, but maybe next year? You could also give them an apron and wooden spoon each.

I find this so frustrating, and it’s a slippery slope; the parent of the “feral farm child” here literally picks her up from school, drops her off at the driveway of the farm and leaves again. Why the 9 year old is running around outside alone at 10pm on a school day is beyond me. We need to ‘rush home so soon’ because DH has to work at 6 am... and shouldn’t you be in bed? Getting to school on time isn’t a priority, near illiteracy is considered no big deal. My mother is parenting the kid more than the parent! Not having kids myself I understand changes my view of it all, but I really can’t fathom the complete disinterest and lack of engagement.
That’s pretty awful. That poor kid.:(

O my gosh they were super cute. What a great tax payment. 🥰

That kid is extremely vulnerable if there are any nasty people about.
It is fairly safe here, not that that excuses the neglectful parenting. Honestly the farm is fairly isolated, and the ferry workers would question her leaving the island without a parent. And in the event of harm to a child here, there would be no stopping the lynch mob that would result.

She does pretty well for herself, and has found a new “best friend” in my mother... who will feed her and keep her entertained. Yesterday they were decorating the building my mom is staying in. My mother is now also the official transportation to school several times a week now. I really think she should be getting paid for all this. Nautica sometimes really acts out to get her mother’s attention at times, but is otherwise quite well behaved. There are only a few kids in her age group on island, and she is literally the only kid here on the south side of the island. She will walk the 3km out to my trailer with absolutely no complaints to help me clean up the trailer... yep, apparently doing dishes and trying to organize my mess is “more fun” than hanging out alone with her toys or watching you tube on her phone. Anything to have attention and interactions with people.

She also shares everything she has, her candy, lunches (although I don’t think two cold hot dogs in a ziplock baggie is a great “lunch”, but I think she packed it for us herself and ate the pocket wiener) and popsicles. No matter how little she has of a treat she will always try to share it with you. Dad is not very well off financially and lives on his boat (child support and very little work here on island). She is saving up her money and for his birthday is going to take him to an optometrist “because he really needs glasses”. Dad is a bit of a recluse, very quiet and shy (a vegetarian too, so we can’t even really share any food with him to help out, they eat lots of pasta and sauce and have several totes of it). She has a heart of gold, even if she can be frustrating at times. The mother I don’t have very much good to say about, so I will leave it at that. Lack of literacy is a problem with all the kids here in general, and there are several people working outside of the school system to improve it. Ironically not the parents of the kids, but some avid readers. Some small featherless chicken tax pictures (shared with parental permission and also previously used for marketing purposes of the local FBook forum)

Child labor is the best... they work for Candy and sausages! We are working on knife safety with her too... because all our knives are extremely sharp, and she is allowed to use them “unless she cuts herself” (then she gets a week of having her knife privileges suspended, mom’s rule) She is also getting pretty good at running the cash box and our POS. She gets a percentage of all the craft sales, and The summer market veggie sales as well. I might buy the supplies and do most of the work for the crafts, but they wouldn’t sell as well from an almost 40 year old as they do when she takes the credit for them. She made something like $80 one Saturday, her dad freaked out that she was making that much money from the market... she’s well on her way to getting him those glasses! If it wasn’t for Covid cancelling our summer Markets he would already be wearing them, as we had planned on really ramping up the craft items this year.

I should add, it gets confusing talking with her sometimes because she will talk about adults as equals as well as other kids. “we had dinner with my friend Les and his dog” her friend Les is in his mid thirties and a carpenter. “My friend Charlotte” always needs clarification... is that the 5 year old or the 25 year old? There are two and they are both redheads.

She sounds like a really great kid overall.

That coop is the Pretties. I can hear them making their happy noises to each other, but I can't see them. The table to the right side of the roses is covered with untouched snow. That is how much we got, at places it's over my knees...

Oh she is! Now my little niece in the other hand just got into some trouble at school. I am sure there must be something more going on because she is also a very sweet kind kiddo. We talked a lot over summer and she was really saddened by the George Floyd riots and all the issues that were going on in the States. She will be 12 in March. She wrote a Christmas card to a boy she likes and called him a “jerk” and she also wrote two letters to boys she doesn’t like and threatened them. She even got a go between to deliver the notes to the boys. Smart, She still got caught though. I think there must be some bullying or something going on, as this really isn’t like her. She won’t explain why or what the boys did to prompt her letters, so I’m torn between being proud of her (if they are being bullies as I suspect) and being worried about where she learned this behavior (I always assumed it would be from me, but I’ve been here for three years so I can’t be the source) chicken tax: I covered the awkward chin part of this pic...

This little girl knocked on my door, I gave her some meal worms and shooed her back out. Then she flew straight into my door about 5’ off the ground. She wants into the human coop... looks just like hers. Chickens 🙄
