Ribh's D'Coopage

For a week or so I've had the feeling that something isn't quite right with Tuppence. I checked her over & I checked her over & for the life of me I couldn't see anything. I wear very strong prescription glasses so perhaps that's not saying much. :( I've been keeping an eye on her but she seemed pretty much as usual except she stopped laying & her comb has been dry & getting blackish. I almost always have a bit of fowl pox due to our huge mozzie population so I was monitoring but I just had the feeling Tuppence had lost confidence. Being on the bottom had never seemed to worry her before. Campines are feisty!

Anyway after reading, reading, reading I decided to treat for lice/mites. I do my coop regularly but I have several hens that get out of the run where their chances of coming into contact with wild birds & their droppings/water etc is far greater. I have spent the morning catching hens. After spraying the 1st one no~one wanted to know me. Tuppence is the only one I have spotted creepy~crawlies on but everyone is getting done. I still have 3 to do. *sigh* And a coop to clean. Again. Hoping I have nailed this.

And I have just discovered these horrors love sub~tropical conditions!:barnie

Good work figuring that out! Lucky hens being looked after properly :)
Mmm, I feel really bad I didn't twig earlier. They are horrid things to have. Tuppence was so much more herself this afternoon but no~one loves me after they all got squirted! :lau Suyin couldn't believe her luck that she was allowed into my lap ~ & then I did that to her! The look she gave me...

That's a lot of work and perseverance with so many hens. Good on you Ribh, those lucky girls have a very conscientious mum.

Good evening folks :frow

Jeannie you had me rolling in laughter :gig:lau:gig:lau but you're doing the right thing and they'll learn to appreciate it.

For those of you down under, today is our Thanksgiving day and thank you for the well wishes. For many years while we were abroad we always had extra people at our table who didn't have anyone else to celebrate with. Last night, the Daughter and her family arrived, today we will have the whole crowd here only missing three of the grands. Here shortly, I'll put the 20 pound factory farmed tom into his brine and will be cooking most of the day. This is one of my favorite holidays as I love to cook. Last night we had a baked ham, fried apples, potatoes au gratin, and broccoli for dinner and today between apps and dinner will be much more elaborate.

Jeannie, when will your daughter be home? It's getting close I think and I sooooo want you to give her a hug from us when she's finally home. :hugs

Happy Thanksgiving to all our American Chicken friends! Any excuse for a big family get together and meal is usually a welcome one ;) though we aren’t this year, Andrew and I have been known to celebrate both Canadian and American thanksgivings in the past. If I ever decide to raise turkey I’m going to need brobably 5-10, just for us!

Good job on catching the nasty crawly monsters terrorizing your poor girl @Ribh ! Parasites are awful... all of them, and it’s amazing when you treat how quickly chooks will bounce back to normal. In dealing with the Farm coop and all the parasite issues in there, I saw way too much of it, so I keep a close eye on everyone here too, though with the tractors, fresh air, and ability to dustbathe I haven’t had any big issues with my girls.

Yes, I remember a lot of parasite issues first off with the farm chickens. I'm blaming the muggy weather & the ton of wild birds we have round here. I'll just have to be vigilant & do everyone regularly. Just happy to know what's going on & be able to treat it!
