I just left my baby Whisper at the vet overnight for IV fluids and kidney and thyroid function testing. It was that or putting him down outright. I’m going to see if we can get him some quality of life with medication. It’s a little selfish, I just got them back and it seems wrong to lose him so soon. I probably should have asked how much it will cost, but I didn’t. I’m balling my eyes out at the ferry terminal to head back home. I have a wonderful veterinarian. Andrew will have to finish the market up on his own tomorrow, I’ll be out on the noon ferry to hopefully collect a hydrated Whisper at the end of their office day, and should have him back home by 9pm our time.

My hatch is going well, I’ve lost count of how many I have exactly, but so far just the one known loss... there may be a few more, but overall the chicks are all healthy and looking good.

Your life is a rollercoaster at the moment with the hatch and now the poorly cat I'll be thinking of you @Kris5902

On the chicken front... the girls are confined to quarters. Ha'penny keeps escaping the run. She doesn't go anywhere, just sort of hangs round the wire, with the flock but not part of it, & then has a conniption when I try to round her up & put her back where she belongs! Yesterday she was in the neighbour's so I will be limiting run time until I can secure the run a little more. The weather hasn't been conducive to outdoor time & I've noticed the girls always get a little feisty when they think they have a free run!And not much supervision! Anyway after I nabbed her I thought I'd hang on to her until she stopped batting & screaming like a lunatic & took her for a scenic tour round the yard [I am not a nut case....I am not a nut case...I am not...] & when John came to say hello to her I realised how far we'd come in our relationship & trust because she screams @ me & makes a fuss but she cowered & quivered @ a stranger putting out a hand to touch her ~ & John was very gentle! Lots of noise but she is ok with me & actually settled in my arm & even when I popped her back into the run she didn't immediately bolt, just sort of shook herself before wandering off. Morning Jeannie He's got a bad case of cabin fever but he's healing nicely. The incision looks to be pretty much closed and the staples are starting to loosen up. He's figured out how to defeat the cone so we have to keep a close eye on him.

So glad he is healing nicely!Waiting to hear how Kris & her cat & the last of her hatch are doing. So worrying when our companions aren't well. Hoping for good news there too.

My vet just called! You have great timing... Whisper is doing much better, he perked right up and is eating and drinking on his own. They gave him over 300ml of fluids with the IV... he’s making friends with everyone at the vet. He’s gone from being a “very, very sick little kitty” (my vets exact phrase yesterday) to a sweet lovely kitty that’s purring and talking to everyone.

I’m taking him home tonight, plus some antibiotics for an infection of some sort, anti nausea pills, appetite stimulant pills, and some fluids and syringes to give him subcutaneously every 2-3 days. On top of his regular thyroid medication and kidney medication (which I think is the #1 thing he stopped receiving that led to this decline).

So long as he has a decent quality of life I’m going to do whatever I can to keep him healthy! I love my vet... he is amazing, excellent with animals, explains things well, shows me the lab results of tests... if only he would also do livestock!

I’ve had a few little issues with my hatch, I pulled two Dead in Shell Eggs this morning and switched incubators last night, because of the funky smell (from the early Hatcher I lost, with the unabsorbed yolk that spilled into the water) in the one I’ve been using. One of the DIS chicks was shrink wrapped, probably from all the humidity drops in dealing with the early hatcher. I had another shrink wrapped chick that was still alive, so I’ve oiled the membrane and am hoping for the best.

28 chicks with one more coming for sure, and I saw some movement in the Marans eggs through a safety hole, so maybe more still coming late? I think I know where the cooler spots are now, and for my next hatch I will move the eggs in the turner when I candle so they all get more consistent heat I thought the fan was supposed to help with that, but maybe it needs a bit more?
