What I want to know is: When you go to call your cat do you yell, Piewacket!! Piewacket! or do you call something like Pie! or Wackie?

She chose well! I think Rocks are very sweet. They were my 1st choice when I started back up & I've been very happy with ours. Their only fault from my point of view is they will go broody in summer!

I love schools that do such hands on stuff though I do worry that the resulting chicks, who don't remain cute & little but grow into proper chickens, end up with decent homes. Not a concern here.

I always wanted rocks myself, and I'm glad I got them.

Thankfully all chicks hatched will come home with me. I'm thinking of only putting in 6 eggs or so. I might throw a few silkie eggs in for fun too.

Oh good, healing up then! Doing good, here. Dreaming of gardens and dirt and warmer weather. But it's so. far. away. Grr. Our weather has been absurdly mild and I seem to forget it's still January

They are out.

One mad rush to start scrabbling under the ficus.

They've been calling since about 4am. Lucky neighbours. Some mornings they are more anxious than others to get out into the big run & for about 10 minutes everyone runs about like a mad thing. They are starting to settle now. Everyone has found a favourite spot to scrabble in before it gets too hot.​

They can't wait ti get out of the coops here in the summer. They tend to forage for a bit early in the morning and after head for shade.

Yes. Our humidity is already @ 76% so it will be hot before too long. I dumped a big pile of leaves in the coop last night so I knew they had foraging material until i could get to them this morning but it's not quite the same as the run & the run has nothing on the garden! I'll be pleased when I can let them loose down the bottom as I don't like keeping them so confined even though it is necessary. I'm blessed they are still laying well despite the heat. One or 2 funny eggs on the really hot days but as they return to normal once the heat drops I haven't worried & put it down to heat stress.

I'm trying to give them as much run time as possible this week as next week they will be confined to the coop. I've just had to bite the bullet before my mother feels totally unloved! I'll only be gone 3 or 4 days but they'll be stir crazy by the time I get back. I can't expect my man to chase chickens the way I do. I'm far more tolerant of their foibles...

It's a shame your man isn't all that with the chickens. I have a similar problem here if I go away. There is a man I know who has taken care of them before. He'll even get them out of the trees. In fact, he thinks that's the best bit because he gets to hold one or two.
Unfortunately he's a traveling man. One day he's here and the next he's gone and no one knows where or for how long. He got left his parents house which is a small farmhouse in the mountains here. I am told he doesn't use the house and sleeps outside. There is something intrinsically decent about him that I can't find the words for.
I've been out and about on the land to come back annd find him in my house making a cup of tea and chatting to the chickens.
