I don't think you need a lot of land for a hive or two ~ but then I don't know about honey bees. Our natives [as in the species we have] only forage about 500m from their hive. If you've plenty of food nearby that's what they'll harvest. Once upon a time most country people kept a skip or two but like so much else people would rather pay someone else to do the work for them even if the end result is poorer quality. One of my cousins used to do bees & honey straight from the hive doesn't taste anything like what you get in the shops. Even the colour is different, so much darker. I've got to paint the new hive apparently. It's a little smaller than our present one & the man has already gone online to order another & a starter colony.
