Ribh's D'Coopage

I thought Lozzie had a Tortie girl.
Yes, Mishka is a Tortie. Sorry, I’ve only just realised I missed a bunch of pages on Ribh’s thread; I’m trying to keep up with her and MJ’s pages as I’m struggling to keep up with Bob’s.

Olivia is a Belgian D'Uccle Frizzle. In their own right these are fascinating little birds, one of the true bantams, meaning there is no standard counterpart. They come from a small municipality in Brussels, Belgium called, yep, Uccle. The D' just means from. They were probably bred from Dutch Booted Sabelpoot Bantams and the Antwerp Bearded Bantam, but nobody is absolutely certain & there may even be some Japanese in there. I'm inclined to think that when I look @ the wing line. These are a showbird more than anything else having feathered feet 🙄, owlish whiskery little faces with beards & muffs, a single comb & an upright carriage. Breeders try to breed them as small as possible. Hen weight should not exceed 28 oz ~ so yes, they are tiny.

Belgians are renowned for their friendly nature & sweet dispositions, something I was unaware of when I purchased mine. As @BY Bob likes to infer it was a case of: Oooh, that one's pretty; I'll take her! I adore frizzles. Lap chickens was never something I aspired to. I am happy for my chickens to be chickens but Olivia has surprised me.

She came with a mixed batch of 8, mostly bantams, as a *young pullet*. Young they definitely were. I'd never had such young birds & was terrified. They were still @ the peeping stage & absolutely terrified of me. Then Olivia had several bouts of sickness ~ Cocci & pox & a stay in chicken hospital inside with me & decided I wasn't so bad & she would happily be a house chicken. What I have noticed with Olivia is she is very much her own chicken & hates like poison to be caught up in the general melee when everyone is rushing to grab their share of treats. She doesn't like to be caught up in the crush & generally manages to be amongst the last to go into the coop run @ night after the 1st rush has subsided somewhat. She. along with Desdemona, is the chicken most likely to be underfoot & she is a shoulder hopper every chance she gets.

While I think I have a pretty good relationship with all my girls Olivia has taken it to a new level. She is definitely a very special little chicken.

For those interested the Australian Belgian Breeders Club has some interesting articles on the breed in Australia.
I love Olivia! :love

So beautiful. I love when cats have that straight line down their nose with one color on each side. It looks so intentional if you know what I mean.
