Ribh's D'Coopage

Now there's a word that's been cropping up lately in the last couple of weeks! I mentioned how at my workplace we were doing Christmas activities; well I held a word challenge and 'discombobulate' was one of them. If anyone is interested (especially @Ribh the wordsmith), here is the list if anyone wants to improve their vocabulary.

Discombobulate
Tannoy
Squall
Hominid
Persnickety
Nebbish
Scrimp
Muliebrity
Serotinal
Spelunk
Exclave
Indefatigable
Xanadu
Mishpocha
Rapprochement
Prodigal
Prelapsarian
Beastie
Fustian
Ambisinister

Let me know how many you got (without cheating!) The best here was four out of twenty!

I got nine!

Discombobulate we all know.

Tannoy is a type of public address system used in places like train stations and anything through a Tannoy is famously hard to hear correctly. I nearly missed a flight because of a damn Tannoy!

Squall is a type of storm.

Hominid I recognise and have gleaned that a hominid is a human like life form, but I'm not confident in this knowledge.

Persnickety is a core feature of my character lol fussy in an unpleasant way.

Spelunk is a verb, let's go spelunking means let's go into a cave.

I don't really know exclave but I assume it's the opposite of enclave. Decontain/contain.

Someone is indefatigable when they seem to never tire.

Xanadu is a mythical heaveny sort of place. I don't recall which of the religions believes in it.

Rapprochement is another one I recognise but don't really know. I think it has something to do with approaching someone or something in a hostile way.

Prodigal. When the prodigal son returns we shall have a BBQ. This is another word the meaning of which I've gleaned from context: the prodigal is the child who has gone far both literally and metaphorically. We are celebratory and proud of our prodigal child.

Beastie is a mythical beast never described in sufficient detail. Like the yeti.
Well, that's more than 9. But I'm genuinely confident in only 8 of them.

Now I can't wait to look up the others!!

Yes, there were a couple I recognised but usually glean the meaning from context without really knowing the definition. Spelunk is one I didn't know & I used to go caving. 🤣

I really enjoyed learning the meanings! Fustian was my favourite because you'd have to be fustian to use the word fustian :lau

The ones I knew were: Discombobulate, Tannoy, Squall, Hominid, Persnickety, Nebbish, Scrimp, Indefatigable, Xanadu, Rapprochement, Prodigal and Fustian. But I didn't count Fustian because I realized I couldn't actually use it in a sentence so then I figured I couldn't really know what it meant. The others I had never even heard of before!

Double points for knowing nebbish! That one's very obscure.

I ought to have recognised scrimp from 'scrimp and save' 🤦‍♀️

While we're on the subject, I encountered the word scrump the other day and looked it up.
