I have a GLW rooster, one year old, that I noticed limping over the weekend. His appetite and behaviors are otherwise normal and he is able to climb into the roost. Upon noticing the limp, it was immediately obvious that one foot was swollen and a quick search on the internet led me to think it was bumblefoot. I gathered the supplies, captured the roo, and was ready to lance injury but do not see a wound causing the problem so I decided to take a few pics and post here instead, would appreciate any feedback.

Follow treatment protocol for bumblefoot. Then address cause. Get bird on dry ground or grass that does not involve walking on metal. Normally the latter is all I do and bumblefoot clears up on its own. The treatment speeds clearing.

Wow...if there is no scab I don't think its bumblefoot.
did he get stung or what's that red splotch on his foot?

I would trim his spurs so you can easily handle him.give him electrolytes and seperate him in a little cage with no roosts and the bottom having a nice layer of pine shavings.put him in shade or inside so he dosent over heat.keep his water cool and give him higher protein level feed.

Is the foot overly hot or normal feeling?
Is it squishy or firm?

Thanks for the reply, it's more squishy than firm and did feel warm to the touch. I washed and very thoroughly inspected the foot, only abnormallity was that reddened area, which didn't appear to me to be the source of bumble foot.

Good call on the bee sting, I do have active honey bees in the area, didn't connect that it could be a bee sting. The bees wander into the coop and drinknthe chickens water when it gets dry like we have seen for the past couple of weeks.

I'll read up on trimming the spurs, but this roo is fairly docile as I hatched him myself and have spent some time with him. (I think the spurs are cool.)

Doesn't look at all like bumblefoot to me and I personally wouldn't try to cut it open or anything, very strange

I have never seen that before. But it could clear up.on.its own.
It mighy be worse cutting it. Maybe cause an infection.
I would wash his feet and legs. Keep him seperated and soft flooring like shavings or sand.
I would give him antibiotics for chickens and vitamins.

Might heal over time.

@AimlessRolling

How is he?

The swelling without a noticeable cut/scab is a bit concerning. I'm not sure what's going on there. Having a vet take a look is always best.

IMHO it would be better to try a non-invasive treatment like soaking in Tricide Neo. This will hopefully draw out infection and heal the foot. Mix 1/2 Tablespoon to 2 Quarts distilled water. Soak the foot 2x a day for 5-7minutes. You can re-use your soaking solution for 5days, then make a fresh batch. After you have soaked the foot, dry it well. You can apply some triple antibiotic ointment or Vetericyn to the foot and wrap it, but without a defined "wound" that may not be necessary.

Keep him separated on clean dry bedding. Add some poultry vitamins to his water and see that he is eating his normal poultry feed. Give extra protein like egg, tuna or meat. For "treats" offer some dark leafy greens/veggies or a little fruit. Limit his intake of "fillers" like corn/scratch.

Keep us posted.

How is he?

Keep us posted.

Everyone, thanks for all the replies. I am in 100% agreement that I will not be cutting him until I can detect a lesion to drain and potentially remove foreign body.

I will clean his feet again tonight and inspect daily to see if it gets better, or worse. This was first noticed about 3 days ago and does not seem to have gotten any worse.

I'll also put him on antibiotics to see if that helps. Any suggestions on antibiotics and dosage/delivery methods?

Thanks again,
Aimless

I am glad you asked here first before you started trying to treat for bumblefoot :)
