i don't know if this has been mentioned but with a post this long probably has, but when he gets stronger you might ought to worm him and your whole flock, both external and internal parasites will make chickens very sick and can kill them, but get him over the mites first, then procede to worming.

I cleaned the coop again, and dusted it and the chickens with the sevin dust really well.
He wouldent eat the cat food, but he ate some of the spinach.


I have been giving him baytril, mostly because I was so worryed about him. should I stop giving it to him???????

I treated them for worms not long ago, but when he's better i will worm them again. what do you use to worm them??? I cant find a good brand.

Valbazen is a really good wormer for chickens, it's not labled for use in chickens but is very safe. go easy on the spinach, seems i've read theres something in it that is not so good for chickens, if you want to give greens try Romain lettuce. but right now he needs alot of protein to give him strength. I'll see if i can find the info. on spinach since i don't want to say this if it ain't so. didn't find a thing on spinach but heres the link to the treats chart in case you don't have it..

I am glad you dusted because I have had a major problem with mites and lost a silkie girl recently. Please remember to treat the old bedding because that is what I didn't realize to do the first time around and became heavily reinfested again. retreat everything in a week. Now I do believe he is not getting adequate nutrition either. Mites thrive on the weaker ones which is what had happened to my girl.
You need to get him to eat his feed. Mine love the feed mixed with water with added vitamins. They think it is some wonderful treat! ;-) LOL You can get the poly-vi-sol for infants and be sure it is the one without iron! Then add some to their water or food to ge=ive them a boost but you have to get them eating a more nutritional diet.
It kind of works hand in hand. He is weaker becasue of lack of proper nutrition and since he is weaker, the mites will thrive even more on him and can eventually kill him!
Hope he soon gets better!

My roo is still down

He walking and stays with the other chickens, but somtimes he just goes off by himself. he also stands a little fuffed alot.
He likes to stand on the steps, right in front of the house door, and just stand there for a long time.

the mite seem to be gone, but I am going to dust again soon, just to be sure.


he has been eating, but to as much as i'd like. I think on of his toes are broken, because it looks like this (picture)

what should i do? I have been feeding him apples, eggs, yogert, a bit of honey, and his normal food.
should I find some meds for him?
what about Tylan 50?

or should I wait longer? how long until he pops back, if it was the mites??????

No I have not wormed again. i will as soon as i get some dewormer.

one of his feet seem to be bothering him. see I think he broke a toe. he is favoring that leg, and that toe is really swollen.
could this be making him so down????? or could it just be that i have to worm again.

Sevin is a neurological inhibitor, the active ingredient is carbaryl. It is classified by the EPA as a possible human carcinogen. On the company web site it clearly states not to use the garden grade dust on your animals or their bedding. It states it repeatedly. It even goes so far as to say that their old labels said that it was ok to do, but this is no longer their recommendation.

On the flip side of the coin, carbaryl is the main ingredient in lice shampoo for humans that you can buy at the grocery store. It is in a different concentration however. Perhaps this would be a rational possibility because the dosage is metered out for humans?

Diatomaceous earth structure on a microscopic level is not changed by wetting it. The physical structure remains the same. It is that structure that causes death to insects by contact with their exoskeletons, inhalation, or ingestion. It is also used for filtration of liquids, cleaning up chemical spills, killing bugs, and in hydroponic systems. Glass stays sharp if you get it wet...so do fossilized diatoms.


I know many people use pesticides and are comfortable with them. This is a choice for each individual and I don't want to get soapboxy. It is what my mother used in her barn back when the label still listed it as acceptable for application. But when I was growing up they were still using DDT too.... Whatever a person chooses to use be it synthetic or "natural" be careful to not gob it on. Use in the directed dose or application rate.
