We just got Pekins yesterday at TSC and while I did research, I was honestly shocked at how much talk of salmonella being passed around with birds. We also have two dogs who we keep on a leash when we go out. I want to have the ducks as free range birds but now I’m afraid if the dogs come in contact with the bird poop, they will potentially bring in salmonella germs in the house. I understand the importance of hand washing after handling them and cleaning a coop. Am I just being paranoid that we are all going to get sick if I have a couple of ducks roaming the property? I have kids and am hoping we didn’t make an uneducated mistake

Yeah..while salmonella is a big deal it can usually be maintained if hands are washed and such. My ducks have been vaccinated for it so they don't have it but I am pretty sure that TSC ducklings are not. Just make sure that if you add more ducks into the flock(mainly adult ducks) then having them tested for salmonella will prevent your flock from getting it. Hope this helps :)

:welcomeOh my gosh we’d all be dead if it was that easy to catch my dogs love chicken duck poop eat it every chance they get and all 5 live inside with us. Now someone with a compromised immune system young or old should def use caution but I feel most of us build up a strong immune system being exposed to things In the environment even poop. Although I try not to handle it but when you have animals your going to get some on you eventually lol

Don't take my personal experience for anything other than my. personal. experience. But when I first got chickens 2 years ago I had diarrhea for about a month. No real "illness". No deathbed action. Then it was over.

My pets didn't show any signs of it. My family didn't show any signs of it. Just me, the Chicken Frau.

All sorts of things are in our environment with or without poultry. Healthy immune systems adapt to new things. Immune systems that never get exposed to stuff never get to become healthy functioning systems.

Live fearlessly!
