Satisfying Aspects of Poultry Keeping!

I thought it would be fun to make a post for everyone to share what they find satisfying about keeping poultry! So basically, just anything that makes you smile and feel especially glad to have chickens.

A couple of things that come immediately to mind for me are:

When you just finish cleaning out the coop and it's fresh and clean and it's just oh so nice to smell fresh pine shavings instead of poo.

And after a long, cold winter when it finally warms up and you can pull out the hose and no longer have to haul out buckets of water each morning. And for all the duck keepers, the first bath after winter is just perfection. Always puts a smile on my face!

the clucking noise hens make when they enjoy some fresh greens, a fresh warm egg, hens sunning themselves with legs stretched out!

Also, hatching chicks and seeing the progress in my flock as I've chosen keepers and for-sales and moved toward my goals.

Letting the flock out onto a new area, and seeing how happy they are to explore.
Doing things like putting leg bands on, keeping records (which I am hopeless at, bty) and planning which hens and roosters are going to be future breeders.

One of the ones that just takes a breath away each time is candling an egg at day 3 or 4 and seeing a heart beating.

There are so many! Here are a couple...

When they are excited to see you and happily sit on your lap to hang out and be petted.

When they sweetly and excitedly call to each other when they find 'goodies'.

Oh I agree. Especially when it's from a pullet you've been waiting for a while! That, and going to check the nests and finding a broody in there
