SCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2011

Or the other negative then vs now.

Then - I was severely abused by the things that raised me, including going to school with visible black bruises and whip marks, no money for lunch and no lunch provided, the things were known to abuse drugs and the system. It was just hush-hush then, 2 teachers EVER said anything and both were ignored. Even then, my sisters and I were so badly treated, had any idiot in that town done the bare minimum required by the laws then, we'd have been in foster care in 2 seconds and the things would have been jailed.

Now - mandated reporting and investigations. No, it's not perfect, but the blatantly obvious crap that my sisters and I went through is not tolerated.

The problem now days is we have so many laws and enforcement related inadequacies that we choose and pick only the self fulfilling laws to focus on. We spend millions prosecuting people for grand stand crimes and put bracelets and keep records of residence on the criminals that really effect us personally in stead of incarceration.

You still can an I do. If you chose to live where you cant that is a different story.

I live in one of the safest places in America, in my opinion. And we'll pobably just have to agree to disagree on the rest!

that's America we're all free to have our own opinions! Isn't it great!

I'd agree though - Far North Idaho is pretty safe, also pretty secluded. We once thought of moving there.

It is and I love it! If I could get more north and more secluded I would... but for the bears... bears scare me! So I'm happy where I'm at!

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Your still gunna encounter things like those in the workplace, just with grown adults. Whether you learn how to deal with it when your younger or older is the difference. I personally would take public school any day. Just my opinion.

My case wouldn't matter WHAT the laws are. I survived extreme child abuse and the idiots were major drug addicts who abused me more because I didn't use drugs when I should. The ideals they taught my middle sister killed her at 20, and I will blame them until the day I die. They were worthless, soul-sucking, vile, disgusting, evil Christian scum. Because the male thing was a war vetern, they were highly respected as hard working Americans when the female thing never worked a day and sucked up government assistance to abuse her drugs. He was almost as bad, but yes, he did work some at one point.

It was illegal then, just no one bothered to be concerned. I'm still the evil child because I left home at 19, then went back and took the baby with me when the middle one died to save the baby, who at 15 had to spend 31 months in rehab without any chance to walk outside the gates. The pastor for the church says I need to repent my sins and abuse of family. I told him to beep off and the only way I was going back to that hell town was to spit on their graves, then spit in his face. I told the sheriff who ignored everything the exact same thing.

Mine isn't a case that would be ignored today. I'm the one who had to live it, I know dang well it should have been dealt with then and didn't because of the idiotic good-old-boys network, but even if the idiots there didn't do anything, the drug abuse, I could have gone to DEA at 14 and at least then, the scum evil things would have been jailed for the drug running and abuse. Which would have solved the problems for me at least, maybe saved the middle kid, and the baby would have never had to spend 3 years in rehab.

Life sucks. It always does in some way, shape or form. But it's better now than it was then. At least for me. And in my life, I'm the one who matters.

1976- son called stubborn and a problem. Teacher complained and called every day. Find out later he is ADHD. Grows up smart enough to own and opporate a paramedic company. This dumb kid paid out of pocket to send over 30 potential employees through school, and together they saved countless lives during Katrina and Rita alone.

1978- second son labled stubborn and unable to learn. Later found to be dyslexic, he's already self taught himself tricks to deal with this. He was the youngest bank manager on record for a leading bank (which hasn't gone under).

1996- youngest son was refused a study to diagnose him as ADHD until he was second semester into first grade. He could not write 1-100, form simple writing tasks, yet verbally forgot nothing. Labeled and teased as stupid, dumb, anti social, once medications started, transformation was swift. By the end of 5th grade the college students at the Y couldn't help him with his math homework. By the end of 6th grade he was doing college level work in all English/math/science catagories. But it took him forever to find himself emotionally, confident of whom he is.

When I went to school, kids were spanked. You had to eat EVERYTHING during lunchtime or go to the office. Girls could not wear pants. Abuse of every kind both at school and home was never talked about. I just went to my class reunion, and one thing I learned is that those whom I thought came from idealistic home settings were in much the same boat as the rest of us. Not enough credit was given to Moms unless they brought baked goods or did volunteer work. Those whom had to go to work, or were divorced were branded unfairly, even by teachers. Children either brought lunch or paid for it. If you didn't, you didn't eat. There were an aweful lot of children whom went without. I'm still trying to figure out why hiding under a desk will protect us from nuclear bombings...However, all children had books, crayons, paper, everything we needed, unlike now.

I do resonate with the initial poster. No, we are not in a utopian society now or then, or ever will. Just humans being humans.

As things usually go, a good idea can always be taken to the extreme and abused. Parental discipline taken too far becomes abuse, lack of which means irresponsible. Self-defense taken too far becomes vigilante. Fighting to defend your country becomes tainted when it is to protect big business. Social Security is another perfect example.

One size does not fit all.
