2 of the 12 Delaware chicks I hatched a couple weeks ago are dwarfs.

It has been a difficult decision, but I have decided to sell Jacob.

I so hate to do this. Mike and I talked and talked about it..... It is apparent that he and some of the girls carry the gene. I am keeping Oliver and 4 girls. I will hatch some of their chicks, and see how that goes.

Not necessarily. Do you have any Kira daughter with him? Remember my Kira baby has a double dwarf gene and she does not require a roo to have it to make a dwarf.

I would stop breeding them and try different girls with him to know for sure. He is worth the investment.

No, I do not have any of Kira's.

See, I don't understand about that double gene thing. All the research I have done says the chick gets ONE copy from EACH parent to make a gene. So, how the double thing works, I don't understand, and I can not find any literature about it.

I do not know if it has been written yet. Remember my vet did the testing back in Oregon. He has proven by test cases and such that a double can be transferred thus making that offspring a dwarf thrower alone whether the male carries it or not. It takes 2 genes yes but he has discovered not always from both parents. I need to call him and inquire. I posted all the findings about Fattie search for that post gal cause I cannot remember all he told me.

That is what I an waiting for he was working on the testing when he checked CB and Fattie...I thought maybe Cb had it because she us so petite...but that wad just from her ling hatch struggle and the egg size and etc. I will try to call him tomorrow to see if the paper us written and submitted. I want it also. Lol

Now back to bed ... ducks woke me quaking in garage ....

I just don't understand it.....

Genes are arranged in precise arrays all along the length chromosomes. One chromosome in each pair comes from the mother and the other one from the father.

Can't wrap my brain around this "double dwarfing gene," thing.

Started my day by slipping and falling in the snow - spilling my coffee on my shirt after i was dressed ( redress required) getting rear ended after hitting a patch of ice and sliding into a busy intersection - oh and did i mention i have silly Del that has gone broody over two eggs with no rooster around ? Lord

And BTW what is that big beast of a rooster a few pages ago? This is a breed? Looks like me today btw

Calling for that "crazy white stuff" here again starting Sunday night thru Tues!!! YUK

We don't know what to do with that stuff down here. We had a load of firewood delivered yesterday so I guess I'll just camp out in my chair, drink wine and watch football, LOL

My first hatch of the year is going well so far. 10 of 10 eggs fertile and developing from my Ohio Columbian Rocks...but only 3 of 10 from my Canadian Col Rocks. Guess it took the 'ol boy a little while to figure things out

Hope everyone is well

Kathy, you did get some birds from Claudia, right? She had some of Janet's earlier stock, some that Kira came from. Kira was the carrier and she was in no way related to Isaac or Jacob. It was determined that Isaac was not carrying the dwarf gene at the time. I'm wondering if some of Claudia's were related to Kira, so that would be hard to find. You'd need genetic testing on what you got from her, but if you don't know which ones those are....do you think Oliver was out of that bunch? If so, could be he is the one, and when added to another in that line, that would produce them. What a puzzler!
Maybe you should contact Janet Holtman, but she told me that Ike was not at all related to Kira and the chances of a dwarf gene in TWO different lines would be pretty unlikely, don't you think? It would mean that Kira was carrying a double copy. Has to be, according to the vet that did genetic testing on Kira's daughter. The bad thing would be if you got rid of Jacob and it was actually Oliver and one of his half sisters that were the carriers.

This is a crazy weird problem to have!

We have the rare advantage of not guessing about this double dwarf gene since by a strange set of circumstances, we have the benefit of actual genetic testing on Kira's progeny. The problem is that you have other birds thrown in the mix from Claudia, so that means you're back to square one with this issue unless you can determine which are from hers, and therefore, some of Janet's earlier stock.

Yes, it's snowing again. I hate snow. HATE it! I also hate heat and flat land or I'd move further south.
