OH YEAH! Nothin' quite as beautiful as a PO'd Sebright. They want the World to know who's the Daddy.

Agreed. The snarkyier, the better.

Hey! I figured out how to take a pic and post it from my phone! Maybe those IT classes this old fart is taking are truly teaching me something! Never too old to learn! "I am a trainable monkey", as the Ranger Cadre once told me.

So, this is LG (Lil Guy), and his ladies, in their lil tractor. I measured him, today, and he's actually almost 8" tall, now. He'll be 1 year in March, according to the breeder. He's the descendant of the man's Sebrights that were killed off by predators about 8-10 years ago. Some of them survived in the bottom land very close to his free range area for his regular, mutt banties as he has seen some "Sebright-looking" chickens in the woods at the foot of the hill he lives on. He lives in a valley about 1 mile wide and 6-7 miles long. He raises mutt banties, for the most part. Actually just lets them run wild on the Miss/Ala line in the northern part of Alabama. He has pens and leaves them open, and the hens go in to lay as he feeds them there. Other than that, they are pretty much free range, to the extreme. He trapped the 4 chickens that I bought from him, by setting snares and then calling me a few days later and sayin, "Bring me $20, and you have a Cock and 3 Hennies." I was tickled as Red (he had red hair as a young man) has rather hardy Bantiesd runnin about. This may be tmi for ya'all, but I love old things and old people. My motorcycles are 1936 and 1978, and my car is a '60 Chevy, and my truck a '67 (Chevy, too, tho I am a Ford man HA!)

It seems that he has developed a droopy feather in his tail, while I have worked these past 2 weeks and only seen them in the dark for feeing. Ha! 12 hour days bring in fence money, tho. hehe

Not really sure how I got some at the top and 1 at the bottom, tho. haha I guess I need more classes! Or better glasses!

Any comments appreciated unless you say he's an ugly mutt. I know he's a mutt, and he thinks that he's purty, think I'll ever breed that color out of his babies? I intend to obtain a few Silvers and Goldens, this Spring, but I'd really like to get some blue-greys out of those ladies. I also like his small size...maybe I'll be able to accomplish that somehow, so long as they help, right? ;)

Those are really pretty but they look more like OE's with a hint of Sebright. It would make more sense to add some new purebreds to your flock rather than try selective breeding to get bk to a Sebright. Not sure if thats what you meant in your comments but just an opinion. They are very pretty and Im sure would give even prettier mystery babies when mixed to purebreds:)

OE's, like Olive Eggers? Now, I'm really confused. They are really small. That Roo is 8" tall. Are there OE's that are that small? Are there bantam OE's? That would be cool. I drove 110 miles, one way, just to buy 2 OE hens, and my family thought I was nuts. I'd love to have mini OE's that looked like my standard hens.

There is really no way to determine their breeding, as they were wild when caught in a trap for me. They are just a mutt cross of whatever. The man's son told me that he once had Sebrights, 8-12 years ago, and from the shape, I assume that they have some Sebright genes. In the top pic, the hen on the left, very dark blue (I say grey, but my chicken-fighting friend says that's blue when speaking chicken??? HUH?) is the one that thinks that I am her Roo. She crouches down for me to pet her, just like hens do for Roos, whenever I get near the tractor. I was hoping that as LG matured, she'd stop it, but no luck, thus far.

To clarify, I want to add in some purebred Sebrights, Golden and Silver, and would love to be able to get Sebrights that are the grey/blue laced. What do ya'all think? Breed a purebred Silver 'Bright Roo to one of those hens? Or try a Silver Hen with LG, my lil blue Roo? I only see pics of silver and golden 'Brights, but never a blue. I love that grey/blue color, and the 'Brights are gorgeous and beg for that blue coloring, I think.

I bought a purebred Silver 'Bright from a man for $5, BEAUTIFUL lil bird, but after 5 weeks of waiting for him to call and say that he had caught it, I stopped by his house on a ramble, and found that something had caught and killed both of his 'Brights. He raised those 2 from an assortment that he received from the TSC that his daughter manages, and the 2 Roos were show quality Silvers, from what I've seen on-line. I also bought a golden Roo, but he was an old man, and only lived another 3 weeks after I bought him. 'Brights aren't very common, in my area, and the only way I can get them will be from a hatchery, at this point. The TSC girl said she's not messing with Banty assortments, anymore as they die off too easily when young. I do much prefer to buy my birds face-to-face. Seems easier on them, that way. Haul 'em home in the cab of the truck. haha

OE, or OEG stands for Old English/Old English Game.

Oh boy, big can of worms just opened up.

They meant OE as in Old English Game bantams. The guy may have had Sebrights back then, but I would be more inclined to think they are OEGB or are predominantly OEGB. It is possible that they have some Sebright hertiage, but I don't see any resemblance whatsoever. Body type is not a good indication since both Sebrights and OEGB have short backs.

Your friend was also right about the color being called Blue. Yes it may look grey to us, but in the chicken world it is known as Blue. Also, there are no Blue Sebrights or Blue Laced Sebrights. There are only two recognized colors: Golden and Silver. There are a few other colors (Buff, Citron, Lilac) that are not recognized by the American Poultry Association (APA) or the American Bantam Association (ABA). Those colors or more common in the United Kingdom, so I don't know how they compare over there. What you are asking is to breed a whole new color variety into a breed. This will NOT happen overnight. It takes years to fully develop a new color, especially with birds like Sebrights that are laced. If you really want to do it, I'm not stopping you. It would be a great achievement. But, I suggest that you brush up on your genetics because there are a lot of genes you will be dealing with.

And regarding the one hen, what she is doing is called the 'egg squat'. And you are right when you say that she sees you as the rooster. It means that she respects your presence and feels safe with you around. The squatting also indicates that she is close to laying or is laying, which means sexual maturity. And so she is getting into the mating position. I wouldn't worry about it though, your rooster will still mate her.
