Self-Sufficient Homemade Recipes

Betty R posted this recipe:

Granola

3 cups rolled oats
1 cup slivered almonds
1 cup cashews
3/4 cup shredded sweet coconut
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons maple syrup
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup raisins
Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.
In a large bowl, combine the oats, nuts, coconut, and brown sugar.
In a separate bowl, combine maple syrup, oil, and salt. Combine both mixtures and pour onto 2 sheet pans. Cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes to achieve an even color.
Remove from oven and transfer into a large bowl. Add raisins and mix until evenly distributed

I've never made granola before and haven't even really used that much of it, but am anxious to sample this. However, I'm wondering about altering the recipe. DH has diverticulosis and can't have nuts (or seeds) at all. Should I substitute perhaps more oats or something else for the nuts? Also, I'd like to add dehydrated apples and cinnamon to this recipe. I assume I would add the cinnamon to the oats mixture and the apples with the raisins.

Sorry, I don't mean to be a dolt about this. I've been researching granola recipes on the web for some time and so much of what I've seen has been varied enough that I find myself second-guessing my own ideas. So, of course I came to the EXPERTS here! LOL

Thanks for always having such great info!!

Oh, after reading your post again, I realize my mistake. DH and I used a nearly full scoop from the oxy container. All of the dishes have a white film on them that didn't wash off after running through the washer again. I had to hand wash and scrub that icky film off!

Everything in moderation...

As an added note: we have very hard water and I still had water spots so I tried filling the place where you put the Jet Dry with white vinegar! Low and behold...it works plus I am cleaning my plumbing lines of the build up of lime deposit! Now I must try the Oxi Cleaner!! You guys are great!

I have been using the liquid laundry soap that doesn't need heated back up before us. I was wondering if I could add Ivory bar soap to it for scent or if it has to be essential oils.

I love my dry detergent however I had to use roughly three to four TABLESPOON of that detergent to effectively get the dirt and blood and chocolate stains out. Some of the stains stayed there permantely so if there is a way I can soak the stained clothes before I get around to washing loads (I usually wash the family's loads once a week).....is there a recipe that I can dump stained clothes in a bucket until washing day?

Kudos for the recipe!

The reason I use so much is that my city water must be pretty hard. Sometimes it comes out a tint of brown in the water. There has been plenty of city workers working on broken water lines or doing sewer work elsewhere. I do not have a water softener...too cheap to get one.

Lol I like the bucket thing. But my four boys make so much laundry for me everyday that if I wwaited once a week it would take me half the other week to get it done. I use about three tablespoons on my clothes and on my dh's work clothes I use four. He gets real dirty from working in a steel mill. Those clothes are a test for any laundry soap.
