Sell Me On A Duck Breed

Pics
I love anything rustic and using whats available makes it it more unique.

And now I understand why you like me....

The uncertainty of the times sure changes things.
Instead of getting rid of birds I am actually thinking about hatching more.

The best part is the WW said, maybe we shouldn’t get rid of all the birds right now..

Of course, she is a woman and could be just trying to get my hopes and dreams up so she can stomp on them and watch me fall.. women can’t be trusted ya know.

You won’t croak...

I like your coop.. is that a speckled Sussex in the pictures ( half in them) ?
:lau It took me a while to find her but I did. There are the “shake ya tail feathers” of my little old Gabby. How in the world did you notice her?

She was supposed to be named “Dot,” after one of my grandmothers, but early on the dang bird would NOT shut up. That is when her name was changed to GABBY. She is a gorgeous bird and being that I am a feather hoarder, hers are the first I go after. I don’t have a freaking clue what I’ll do with ALL my sorted feathers, but I have them if I ever figure it out.

The old Gabster has since been replaced by my PITA Dominicker as the most vocal bird, but she is still a sweetheart. (I have no idea what that white line is in front of her eye.)

She is a master worm gatherer. Since I’ve been working on this coop, every time I move a piece of wood that I’ve had laying on the ground for a couple of days, she is there and “all ova that ground.” These birds amaze me at how they can pull a worm straight out of a hole without a hitch. Me? Nope, they hang in that hole so tight I pinch them in two.

Ralphie, do you like the Speckled Sussex breed?

Oh, and thank you for the bonafide compliment on the coop!

I love Speckled Sussex, they are friendly sociable and will sit in my lap and talk for hours.

I had a good line of them and did well at the shows until that ***************** Stole my 90 best birds a few years ago. Since that time I have not been able to breed up a decent line.

I am going to let the SS I have die off and not continue with the breed. It is just too cold for them up here. They suffer a lot during the winter and with the WW retiring I doubt we will have the extra money to heat an area for them. When I showed them I had to heat a cage for the rooster to maintain his comb.

Oh good gracious. That is awful. I’m so sorry. They do have good sized comb. I don’t have to worry too much about frost bite, but I do worry about heat stroke every summer. It does get brutal at times.

I really hate you’re not keeping up your line when you obviously have a gift. That’s really sad to me. :hit:hugs

It’s not a big deal, I am just too old and don’t have the time it would take to build up a line of showbirds again. And buying them is not the same to me.

I too have always wondered how the hell birds do that!
They make it look so easy.
