September Hatch-A-Long!

seems with all the joys the last few weeks have been riddled with loss for a lot of us!

But then thefirst chick from a new batch hatches...

Hmm, I suppose my hatchery chicks don't quite qualify for the hatch-along but they certainly would like to participate!

Somebody hatched them, so it counts.

I'm so sad today, my polish silkie died this morning now my sizzle seems to be going down hill...I have some legbars that sound wheezy and none of them have ever been out! only a week old and still in the house under the heat...I'm giving everyone the RX made up vitamin water with cayenne pepper and garlic in it antibiotics had to be mailed. none of the outside birds seem sick but I'm treating everyone!!
This has not been a good month. I hope your chicks get better.

mondays hatch is finally piped 3 more silkie mixes..
andddddd looks like i will be joining oct hatch along, a friend of mine heard i lost a bunch of my hens and is giving me all the eggs she has. blue laced red Wyandotte, golden laced Wyandotte, and black copper marans...

OK..im sorry..1 more question.  Im FULL of questions!!!! When taking eggs out of the turner and laying them on their side in hatcher..does it matter if dipped part of aircell is up or down?  Do I candle and then lay them a certain way?  I checked 2 of them today and saw movement and the aircells have grown a lot since the 14th!
Dip goes up :)

I think someone was asking about candling?

Here is how I hold the egg and flashlight in my hand while I trace the air cell with my other hand. Shown with and without flash so you can see the air cell etc. I always hold it the same way it is in the incubator auto-turner (especially with shipped eggs which won't stabilize rolling air cells till about day 14) rather than turning it upside down or sideways.

well sizzle passed and my turkey pipped its air then expired! no more disappointment and loss for awhile I hope!
:( So sorry :hugs My final two hatchlings are alive still but very weak. One is a blue orpington I think who I actually thought was a dead egg since about day 16, LOL! So glad she is alive still. The other is the miracle chick that shouldn't be here (100% assisted, busted yolk, head between thighs and behind her own butt with one foot up and over across her own back). So I will enjoy them as long as they are here, and not try to expect too much. I will get pictures when I get a chance. The whole family is down with a horrible tummy bug right now :(

Here's an updated pic of the babies I hatched the 1st and 2nd <3 some of them are moving to new homes soon because I ended up with way too many so it's bittersweet.
The ones I have in the incubator now are doing great! I put 16 eggs in and 2 weren't fertile, one is a double yolk that so far looks like two babies in it we're on day 11. Hatch day Sept 27th for this group! I have 4 shipped blue cochin eggs and 2 shipped black cochin eggs that so far have great development and movement in them! I've never had good luck with shipped eggs so I'm praying this time will be different!! The rest of them are my Leghorns and Golden Comet hens with Australorp Roo. Probably last hatching eggs out of him because I'm probably gonna sell him soon.
