Great! welcome!

I had a nightmare last night... I dreamt that I looked in the bator and it was full of
messy scrambled-like uncooked eggs! ... must be nervous about my first hatch!

I'd love to join this thread.
I set 15 eggs in my Brinsea on the 10th, hatch date 3/31, just in time for Easter. I was gong to hold off and have them hatch Easter Sunday but we'll be out for the day and I want this hatch settled in the brooder by then. This is my 2nd try at hatching.

And while I'm waiting, I have 1 week old chicks to keep me occupied.

48259_chicks1week31310.jpg

This hatch produced 12 of 24 shipped eggs.

I've hatched shipped eggs before, under hens. Once 100% & once 0% but average at 50%.

What kind of incubators is everyone using?
Does everyone take lots of pictures?

You can see my notes from my 1st hatching experience on "My page".

HI Brenda, I looked at your page! Very interesting...

What is the Rock n Roll method of egg turning?

I have a Thermal Air Hovabator -- all manual. Thought it would be fun to turn the eggs...

What kind of silkie eggs did you set? I set 9 silkie/frizzle (sizzle) eggs... mostly splash. (plus 8 others)
It was exciting to see your pix of your progress and new babies! Congratulations.
... now I'm even more excited to see what we get!

Is there any way to tell if an egg is viable at Day 3? I have one egg that looks very porous...

Oh, thanks for letting me join.

...as for pics of my lav and PI silkies...well...I'm just terrible with getting pics on the computer. I can get them on there, but have an awful time doing anything with them. I'll try.

I guess my mail lady backed out. No mutt eggs were on my doorstep.

I was having a really hard time regulating temps, but I think I got it now. I hope.

Brenda, those chicks are just ADORABLE!!! Can I still have the black and silver one???

That's me running away with him, if you say no. I TOLD YOU GUYS SHE ORDERED MORE EGGS!!!

Brenda made me buy a digital humidity and temp thing. It's fresh from Walmart and will go into my ancient incubator. Ghosts of chickies past probably think its a futuristic piece of a something or other, but at least it tells me the humidity without having to think. It even has a memory of high and low temps and humidity...not bad for eight bucks! My old hygrometer looks really cool and professional with the tube in the middle and the wick and all, I just don't know how to read it. I'll leave it there for effect, though.

OH, I do have one question? How many HOURS do all of you spend just staring at your thermometers? Am I the only nutso that sits in front of this thing hours on end???

Hi rocknrobin!

I went to your page and just loved it! Your chickens have a great set up, no wonder you want more. And...sizzle's! I can't wait o see pic's of these babies. Your cats are beautiful. They act just like mine around the chicks. They KNOW the chicks are our pets also.
Are the other eggs from your chickens and just the sizzle's shipped?
The Brinsea I'm using has rails and the rails hold the eggs, pointy side down. By rocking the whole incubator to the left or right they are supposed to tip or roll to the left or right, thus turnng all of the eggs. It worked perfectly my frst hatch. This one would not cooperate. I think it's because the eggs are not as uniform in size. This time I'm using an egg carton with the bottoms cut out and placing a 2 1/2" book under the whole incubator to tilt it to the left & right.
The 1 week old chicks in the picture were eggs shipped from Bobbi Porto.

She is the best! The 2 black ones with the white butts, feet & wing tips I'm hoping are lavender splits. I may have some lavenders in there, I have 3 very silvery ones. I have 4 buffs and they are going to be beauties.
A blue from her Tarzan. Another from Merlin's Beard, hopefully a lavender splash.

The eggs in the bator now are from April (Brody'sBroodello)! I am so excited! Her porcelains & lavenders silkies are fantastic! I am lucky to live close to her and she met me so I would not get lost. Thank you April

. She has an auction going right now, and it is going up hourly.

So these eggs are not shipped.
I've had porous eggs go both ways. I think it's too early to tell. I'm wating 'till day 6 or 7 to candel.

Good luck and post often!

Margo!
yes, I ordered more eggs. How could I not get April's eggs. She hardly ever sells eggs. It was a opportunity I could not pass on...
Her split chicks sell for $50!
So glad you got the 2nd thermometer, as a double check. You'll sleep better.

.
I only look at the incubator about 20X a day now, down from 200x a day so I'm getting better. And I no longer wake up in the middle of the night to check it. With all of the storms last month, keeping power was a concern.
How's the temp & humidity running on that old redwood bator? They are supposed to be to die for!

Thanks! -- Sometimes I feel like I live on Noah's Ark! ... animals everywhere... we're getting another litter (3) of foster puppies tonight. We'll have them for a week and a half and hopefully find them homes... Shepherd mix.

All 17 of our eggs are shipped eggs. We don't have a rooster (yet). Not sure what I'll do with all the roosters we might get!

I can't wait to see pictures of everyone's babies!!!
I checked out Brody's Broodello eggs -- wow! that auction really went up! but the birds are beautiful!

OK -- I have a problem... every time I see someone else's chicks, I want more!!!! Does anyone else have this problem!
And I've only had chickens for 7 months, now! We're already looking at expanding the coop...

Hi Crazyperson ... You have to figure out how to post! I can't wait to see pix of your chicks! It took me awhile to figure it out too. You just go to your uploaded pix section and copy the typed IMG link and then paste it into the post... the picture will appear when you post.

OK -- I don't stare for hours... but I log everything! time I turned, temp and humidity when I turn, etc.

I'm getting some variation ... only a degree or two, and hope that everything will still be ok.
