Hi! So far from my 12 Wyandotte's shipped eggs I have 3 that are moving!
I have 2 eggs from my flock that are black sex link crossed with SG Dorking roo over a small buff Silkie hen that's very PQ. I go into lockdown on Tues!
I only keep them in a box for a few days, I have a 4' x 4' brooder outside. I like the style of your brooder and you have a big assortment of baby stuff.
I use the Purina medicated starter and give polyvisol drops in the water for few days. I put paper towels in a cardboard box and that's where they live for about a week. After they are a couple days old, for a treat, I give them a pinch of dry bread crumbs ( the fine ones that come in a can) in my hand, they go nuts over it. Not sure if thats bad for them but never had any problems with it. They become very tame and coming running to my hand.
It would be great if we could count our chicks before our eggs hatch. I would be less nerve racking

I know what you mean - last time we almost had 7 hatch - but the 7th got knocked all over the place before he could get out of the shell and ended up dying after pipping. The 6th hatched and then died within 3 days. So even hatching doesn't mean much. I'm hoping some of this batch makes it. Otherwise we'll wait until Sept to try again - after school starts up.
My other set of Marans eggs go into lockdown tomorrow. I'm going to try to sneak them in the hatcher provided I have no pips going on with the BPW between now and tomorrow morning.
That's the thing when ordering multiple breeds of shipped eggs. I tried to arrange shipping on the same day, but missed it by 24 hours.
I have 13 eggs that made lockdown. One silkie egg was a bit bigger egg with a very pointy end. When I candled the chick looked small to me and the clear space huge taking up almost half the egg. I thought maybe it was a quiter but it was moving! so a little worried about that one because of the size.
I had one of those huge air cells in a really small egg and almost tossed too, it pipped on day 18 and hatched day 19, and is doing great on day 20! I would have never guessed it would hatch, much more be alive, so good luck!

I'm gonna try using the egg crate method too for the first time. I go into lockdown tonight. I've always just let them hatch onto the metal grate, but clean-up is gross and stinky. We shall see.

I have done both ways and the only thing I noticed is that setting the eggs on the grate and letting them hatch that way I had less leg issues than hatching out of the carton. This last hatch out of 15 chicks I had one broken leg, and two spraddle legs upon hatching and one of the spraddle legs had a case of wry neck as well. I am not sure if it was from jumping out of the egg cartons when they hatch. I did see someone say on here to cut the cartons in half to make them shorter and I think I will give that a try and see if it makes a difference. They had a really hard time getting out of the cartons so I am wondering if that was a contributing factor to the leg problems. I have also heard you can raise the grate up and do the same thing as well. Not sure which method I will choose for this hatching.
I am in hatch process ! 37 eggs made it from 43, all shipped.
So far I have :
6 chocolate orpingtons
3 black orpington
2 RIR
2 copper maran
2 split orpingtons (both boys )
4 legbar, (two girls two boys)
