I have a question... I have read so much, I'm just confused. We built a styrofoam bator... regulating temp and humidity now... eggs should be here Saturday... letting them set till Monday... hoping to put some under broody silkie (who is now trying to hatch a non-fertile egg)... and the rest in the bator.

Did put in a fan from an old computer... have the Thermometer & Hygrometer in and watching closely... adjusting airholes & water accordingly... but when I put the eggs in... should I just lay them in there on the wire or should they be in an egg carton? If egg carton, which end up? How do you turn them in the carton?

I really want to do this right... and like I said... so much info I'm confused.

Thanks for ny assistance.

I put mine in cartons. When you add the eggs your temp will drop, do not adjust as it will take time for the contents of the eggs to get to temp.
I tilt the whole carton, it saves time turning. It is a personal choice. I can fit more in the bator and turn them faster than if I just set them in(I can fit 9 doz in my homemade bator in cartons)
why are you letting them set till Monday? I unwrap mine and let them set a few hours to get to room temp then I put them in the bator flat in the carton the first day then start turning after that(I don't let them set too long out of bator so they don't keep getting older). If you use a carton you need to put them big end up since that is where the air cell is.
to turn them in the carton I CAREFULLY shift the carton from being on it's side to being on it's other side. Problem with this is if the bator is somewhere that someone can bump it the eggs can fall out so i ALWAYS have mine waaaay out of anybody's way.
