Setting the week of August 22 (or so... ) Everyone join!! You know you want to!

I just tossed my 12 lemon cuckoo orp eggs. They were all duds. I think the heat or the shake rattle and roll in shipping must have done it. Cause I have 12 eggs from another BYCer and all 12 of her eggs have serious veining in there. They were set 1 day apart...with the lemon cuckoo orp being set first. booooooooo hooooooooooooo I really wanted to see a few lemon cuckoo orps.

Where did you get your lemon cuckoo orpington eggs?

Dark blob... ? Well, everyone loses at least a few !! what day are you on ? In my eggs I can only see a few veins if I shine the light through the top because so much mass is taken up inside of the egg. Yolk, the chick, the veins and everything between. As for the healthy egg with the odd air sac, maybe you could try hatching him/her yourself ?

Ok so I have three good quail eggs and one good Cochin bantam egg on day 9. The quail is on day 5. I am pretty excited.
I thought I would share this with you guys. I thought I might try building a incubator to use as a lockdown bator, and if it doesnt work I will buy a real one. I stopped by a thrift store to see if I could find a lamp and a fan... Instead, I found a wooden box that someone had rigged with lights and plexiglass cover for what I assume it was for a display case. It was only $2 :D. So I just spent the afternoon trying to figure out how to set it up. Here is what I came up with. I still need to find a fan for it. It also isn't running the right temp yet, so I will have to adjust it, but I think it's a good start.

Thank you for the good wishes !

Yes, I'll keep it in until it starts smelling, rings, or loses its veining. Hopefully there's a little chick in there... And I've heard of that !! People thinking the eggs were dead and they were really just slow, slow developers. I'm not throwing any away until day 10. I would wait until day 12, but the other eggs will be shipped in on day 10 and they need to settle and begin incubating as soon as possible.

Also, most of the chicks will die in different stages ? I thought after week 1 most were in the clear !! I figured I would lose 1-3 maybe.

Shipped eggs is really a gamble. Most times you haven't met the person that's sending you the eggs in real, and the longer the distance the more likely your hatch rates are going to plummet. The people handling the box could also shake it around, put it in too warm areas, etc. Thankfully, I know the person that packaged them well and the box is completely STUFFED with peanuts and each egg is in a foot or more of bubble wrap. Also, since there are 24, I figure I'd get around 4 chicks and a duck at least ! Of course though, like I said it's still a gamble...
I know i am putting a bummer on you not to be mean AT ALL but hate to see you expect to lose 2? and then it be moreIT MIGHT NOT BE though!!!.Your hatches from the other eggs local oe yours will probably be a good hatch ..
Read all the posts on here and other hatch threads at day 20 and 21.....You willl see what i mean. Then you can be happy at what you do get and not sad .

Why i say this shipping ....I read someplace a credible source like a university? if you find your eggs dead in an eggtopsy in different stages of development it can be from shipping (but also wrong temp or humidity .)
The jogging around affects the growth in some way and I believe it b/c i eggtopsied most of mine in 6 hatches all shipped (got 1/4-1/3 hatch ) and a few were clear but each time like 4 or 5 at at least were dead at different stages
Some times even in a yellow yolk if you go thru it outside with a stick ( so scientific what i use HAHA ) you might find a very early baby not just totally clear.
Anyway this even happened once i had my genesis which holds the temp really even like 99.5 -100.1. Temp is the other thing that can cause varied death stages.Of course badly fed parents have to be added into the mix breeding unhealthy chicks.BUt i think all of us with shipped eggs have had the negative experience .YOu have to think....Half is good!! And MORE fantastic!!!
But I have to believe it Also watching many hatches of all the ppl on here and their hatches you see a pattern in shipped.Yo u should eggtopsy if you have bad eggs b/c you can find things you might do better next time by what they look like ...Clear? dead very early? dead later?
BUT...that all said you CAN have a great hatch!!
This is my 7th? hatch and at day 18 i had the most i ever had make it this far day 20......11 of 14!!Dont know if all will hatch .Sometimes they dont. but I Have 5 star cracks so tyhatys pret ygood for me,.

I think the breeders usually pack the eggs well.
In 8 shipments (just got another today) Ive had ONE broken egg!!
Most of it is the trucks jogging around. My husband drove those things and it is SERIOUS bouncing not like a regular truck more like the horse kids put money in at stores to ride but mpore rough !!LOL
AND the dock workers are not gentle AT ALL
Even if it says Fragile or EGGS
My nephew is one and he said he TRYS if he sees fragile but they are packing trucks quickly and so not usually really gently in ANY way he says just throw them in and he is a VERY conscientious kid Everybody hates that its like that but what are you going to do if the chicken you want isnt any place close by? Or eggs?

Oh no, I'm not expecting much out of the shipped eggs, I meant I plan on losing 2-3 fom the local eggs that are already developing ! I've read all around on good shipments and bad ships, all depending on different things. I know not to expect half of those to hatch ! I have around 8 developing chicks now from the locals and will end up with around 5, I know. Thank you for the heads up, that was VERY nice !!

I look at all the dead eggs, but since I'm just beginning, my eye isn't really trained to be able to tell, say, "This looks like a day 5.." or "Probably around day 17.." but I still take a look at them.

Also, is 3 a good number to expect to lose since we're done with the most important days of development ? Like I said, first hatch so...

Icant tell you about what you will loose. There are just too many variables I dont even know what i will each time.. Each shipment is different too .Some really good and some terrible some soso just hard to predict at all. Then theres the incubator itself..if your temp get way too high or varies too much if your humidity gets wonky.

But shipped I 'll tell you now what i am doing. I get at least 10-12 eggs of anything i set no less. That way I have a greater chance to get more babies MY first 2 hatches i set 6 and that just didnt work at all for me..I need better odds.

The more you look at the eggtopsys the more you will sort of be able to get close idea Maybe not day 5 but around day 5.
Does your incubator give a troubleshooting chart?
Good to look at after you eggtopsy your eggs. Also its good to have the local eggs in with the shipped THEN you will be able to tell better what is going on .Someone did that the other day used them for a control and i thought it was genius
PUt local eggs in with shipped b/c most local hatch WELL I have heard. So if they hatch and the others dont thne it wasnt your bator.
...Look at the photos someone has up on learning center on development each stage. Some one teel wehat develps to oweach stage. Its a drawn set of pics.

I usally dont count on anything until candling on day 18.Then if the egg looks all dark ..you probably got one gonna hatch BUT that just me.
But its nice to watch them grow too and its how you learn. I only candle day 10 then day 17, sometimes another time inbetween to see whats up.But my eggs have been all brown ones and ireally usually dont see much but a dark blob a few times veins but most times not even that..Guess i can use a better candler.

They say going by the egg weight is the best indicator of how well they are doing with the humidity you are using .The air cell size seond best wa y to tell. .But i always forget to weigh them before iput them in. .

Also i read they develop the most until day 7 well grow wings legs beak etc some ppl say dont candle before that but seems lots do and are ok.
There are lots of theorys out there as you may have figured!! LOL

they were pretty cheep. I won an auction here on BYC for them. they still sell them. Rockinpaints and Farmerboy24 i think it was. I tossed the farmerboy24 ones..they must have gotten too hot. Rockinpaints too..I ordered them in the middle of heat waves... I will try again. Rockingpaints has another website and has pictures of their birds.
