Exactly! I notice a lot of people are doing it already anyway, but if we could make it something we all do consistently I wouldn't get confused or have to backtrack to figure it out

Sadly, I can't tell you because I don't know, Roxanne. I got him as a grown up and he's a cuckoo marans, not a barred rock. I can say my barred rock hens all have smallish combs, but I don't know if that's a breed trait or just this particular batch.

Oh thanks I guess if i looked at the color i should have known he wasnt a BR.
Someone else said a hen and her attitude isnt very roo like plus shes like the others are.. laying-squatting ? on the ground when i come in the pen Funny They never liked to be touched and now they dont move a muscle. Do they think i am a roo in ppl disguise?.chickens are interesting.

Well, I candled my eggs yesterday after I got them in the mail, and only 9 of them have good air sacs, which is ok with me, because they happen to fit perfectly in my incubator! I put them in this morning. Decided not to stack eggs, because my incubator is pretty tiny and if I did stack them, I think I would probly end up breaking a few eggs.. Im not very graceful

Sorry to hear about the lemon cuckoo orps! (did I spell it right? sorry imma bad speller) they are very pretty birds. Im sure you will have better luck next time!

Sorry to hear about the lemons:-( I was really looking forward to seeing them too. I went on Ebay a couple days ago and bid on lavender Orpington eggs and I won(ya) but just got the news my hubbies check won't be here till Tuesday because of weekend holiday, hopefully I can still get them

No problem. Just by the way her tail is, makes me believe she is a hen. I never go by the comb unless there'd is sizeable difference from male to female. My female has a smallish comb. But I also have a Marans that has a huge comb. I love the Barred Rocks, I only have one but will be breeding her to my olive eggers to get the barred feathering.

Oh no !! Some eggs don't show development for 10-12 days !! I doubt it was viable but just for future reference lol.

I'm new to incubating and I'm not sure what to be looking for in their air sacs. Most of my bantams eggs air sacs are already taking up a good, maybe almost 1/3 of the egg. We're on day 9.

Yes, I'll keep it in until it starts smelling, rings, or loses its veining. Hopefully there's a little chick in there... And I've heard of that !! People thinking the eggs were dead and they were really just slow, slow developers. I'm not throwing any away until day 10. I would wait until day 12, but the other eggs will be shipped in on day 10 and they need to settle and begin incubating as soon as possible.

Also, most of the chicks will die in different stages ? I thought after week 1 most were in the clear !! I figured I would lose 1-3 maybe.

Shipped eggs is really a gamble. Most times you haven't met the person that's sending you the eggs in real, and the longer the distance the more likely your hatch rates are going to plummet. The people handling the box could also shake it around, put it in too warm areas, etc. Thankfully, I know the person that packaged them well and the box is completely STUFFED with peanuts and each egg is in a foot or more of bubble wrap. Also, since there are 24, I figure I'd get around 4 chicks and a duck at least ! Of course though, like I said it's still a gamble...
