Setting the week of August 22 (or so... ) Everyone join!! You know you want to!

I'm on day four, I opened the bator to turn eggs when I got home from work, and again I smell old cooked egg smell, sniffed each egg till I found it and then candied them all. Out of the eleven eggs I set one is bad, two may have quit already (kind of think do from the beginning they seemed to already have blood rings before they even started), three possible heart beats, and the rest still look kinda clear but I'm going to grove every thing a few more days and check again,.except the rotten on that is.

dandydoodle, that's cool. I did a google search one time and found out that there are 7 other people in the country with my first and last name.

I'm on day 12,5, and 0.

Yeah I got shipped.
Local so preferred...It had gotten cooler so i thought i'd chance it of course now the forcast is 90's!! Hope its at least cloudy from Isaacwhen they are shipped.Just dont want the truck 120-130 degrees which they get in the sun.Bad enoug tthe bouncing
By the way when your Roo in the avatar was 20 weeks old was he cock a doodle dooing yet.?I have a "Hen" who i notice today ... has a way bigger comb than the other hen.NOt the waddle? is it?It hasnt crowed but wondered do the hens get a big comb on Barred Rocks?.

Sadly, I can't tell you because I don't know, Roxanne. I got him as a grown up and he's a cuckoo marans, not a barred rock. I can say my barred rock hens all have smallish combs, but I don't know if that's a breed trait or just this particular batch.

I just tossed my 12 lemon cuckoo orp eggs. They were all duds. I think the heat or the shake rattle and roll in shipping must have done it. Cause I have 12 eggs from another BYCer and all 12 of her eggs have serious veining in there. They were set 1 day apart...with the lemon cuckoo orp being set first. booooooooo hooooooooooooo I really wanted to see a few lemon cuckoo orps.

Day Nine. I've just tossed my one clear egg (it had a large pale yolk, no sign of so much as a blood spot). The other 15 I keep thinking a different set of 4-5 eggs looks like they might not be fertile! But there are definite wiggly embryos in plenty of them, and the air cells are developing nicely.

Oh YAY ! I set a bunch of bantams and a few standard eggs and even 2 ducks in my home made incubator. Today we are on day 9!! Can I join in ?

So far I've tossed 2 blood rings, sadly. I put the standard eggs in COOL temps and they started developing !! Literally like 85-87 degrees ! So now I have 2 standards develooping for sure. One duck, and about 6-7 bantams.

I have one egg that's really worrying me, if anyone could please help out. It does have a black mass, and it also has veins, but the mass is like a horizontal line instead of a circle. Also the veins are all surrounding the line of the blood ring, creating a thick red circle around the embryo. I know it's not a blood ring- like I said, I've seen those. Plus the embryo would have disappeared had it been dead. It's really super thick. It's been in slightly cooler temps than the other bantams, though. Sometimes I can identify what looks like a few good veins inside the blood ring, sometimes I have no clue. Could it be dead/dying, deformed, developing... I have no clue, these birds will be the first I've ever had and my first time incubating.

I'm getting some eggs shipped in from Georgia to MI tomorrow as well !! Two DOZEN eggs ! Ameraucanas, Olive eggers, marans (I think some French Copper, which is hard to candle... Here we go..) French Rouen ducks and maybe some rare breeds. I guess I'll just have to see !

I wish the best of luck to all of you and hope you have GREAT hatches !! :D

Sounds like you will have a varied and an interesting hatch.Cant wait to see!
The one you are worried about Keep it in. You see veins and a dark form,..thats good. I wouldnt worry yet about the shape...Best to keep them in if you have any thought they arent clear
Many ppl have opened eggs they thought for sure were not viable and sadly found moving chicks inside Better safe than sorry.
.Let it go until day 18 then candle them all and see how that one looks.

Others.... If its red and not a blood ring then keep it for now Once some hatches back I thought one was for sure a blood ring but left it in and later saw it was a chick forming! Also most die before hatch if they are not meant to survive for various reasons. Dead dying deformed will work itself out in the next week or so

.Shipped eggs. I wish you a good hatch and it can happen.... just know that shipped eggs average hatch is about 50% or sometimes a lot less. . I always have gotten shipped eggs so far my hatch rate total is about 1/4-1/3 . Still some ppl have GOOD hatch rates on them sometimes.
I notice ppl who buy local or their own hens have about 80-85 % hatch rate. So just go in knowing that and you wont be so terribly dissapointed in how many you get. if they all dont hatch.
GOOD LUCK and enjoy hatching. Its exciting and hatching threads are fun too and informative.Great ppl on them.

I am only on day 6- i have ameraucana and black copper marans eggs in there so I'm not sure I can candle them. I will be weighing my eggs tomorrow though :) So far temps seem to be good, humidity is between 30-40. I added a tablespoon of water a couple times the last couple of days because my acurite digital thermo/hygro combo kept reading 16% humidity (which is the lowest it could go, so it might have been lower than 16%). However, that is all moot as I just discovered after calibrating a second analog hygrometer that the humidity for the acurite was more than 10% off, and although my temps were fine the acurite was reading it as 97 or 99 (never ever showed me 98). I going to return it, I know other people have found it very accurate, but mine is totally inaccurate, and you can't calibrate it.

The good news is I just bought a fantastic probe type thermometer that I calibrated with the ice test and its spot on with temperature. :) It's made by Coralife and its a aquarium thermometer but it has a probe so I can put the probe through a vent and on top of the eggs and see the temperature from the outside of the incubator. Top of the eggs reads 99.5-100 yay! It also gives me fractions, which the acurite I bought doesn't. And best of all it was only $15. So now I have two glass aquarium analog thermometers in there at turner height, an analog humidor hygrometer and the coralife probe thermometer. I'm relieved that the incubator seems to have been in the right parameters all along *whew*.

Since we are all on different hatch schedules, I would love it if we could also post what day we are on in our posts? That way I can follow you on your hatch!

So me first DAY 6 (but I said that already) ;)
What day each post... Very good idea Wahmommy! b/c towards the end someone posts they have hatching or cracks or no hatches etc and you wonder are they 19,20 21,23? and have to ask or go back 20 posts to find out.
