Setting the week of August 22 (or so... ) Everyone join!! You know you want to!

Hey all! Nope, dandydoodle, I didn't set any eggs :p I withstood your and Aschenfire's hypnosis!!! Which is good because the five from the last hatch (all still going strong and growing like weeds) and the eight new babies from Meyer are outgrowing their cage already -- I can't believe how much they've grown in a week! But I haven't been on in a while so I wanted to jump over and say hi and wish everyone happy hatching!!! I did clear out a few of my hens -- gave the two NH reds and the oldest barred rock to a lovely lady with a seven year old son who loves chickens, so they're off to a happy life as lap chickens with a big yard to roam in, yay! -- but decided against setting any more, anyway.

With luck, other than rehoming extra roosters, I'll have enough room for all the current avian residents and will be able to keep them all. I'm going to wait till spring and see if any of my new acquisitions go broody :) I kept meaning to post pictures but it's been a busy, busy week!

Last post for now ...i am just blabbing along ......Just read back the posts so far. Hadnt followed this thread but then broke down and bought eggs last night .(Slap me!)Should set by Friday.so iwill be the end of this week thread hatch.

I tell ya, Roxanne, the one thing I keep being tempted to do is pick up a dozen fertile store eggs and set them, just to see if they'll hatch! I really don't have the room, though, fun as it would be...

I got my EE all settled in the brooder coop. Gave her 14 (I drop one :( she took to them and we are on day 2. I can't wait for these barred roocks to hatch.
Cluckatail I see you are not far from me I live in West Salem. Welcome to the forum

Candled all again and saw little eyes and even a heart beating in one. I think 2 of my 14 are not going to do anything but giving them a few more days.

I can see this being very addictive.

Okay.. since this is my first hatch and homemade/rebuilt incubator <guts of an old old old hovabator... I of course had issues....I put the eggs in about 9:30 am on 8/24... the temp dropped as I expected so I did nothing. That evening still holding good 100 to 101, the next morning... 110! (had hit 111 at one point but no clue how long ) I immediately misted them and adjusted the temp down... I pretty much figured I'd killed them in less that 24 hours. I decided to just get it adjusted and see. It spent most of the next day in the in the 90's (as low as 94 at one point) then then next few days it kinda wobbled around in the high 90's, yesterday I FINALLY got it stable between 100 and 101. (still air)

Well knowning it was early and figuring with the high temps followed by the lows if there was any developing... I probably wouldn't see it yet.... I was gonna wait until day seven (which according to my chart would be the 30th. Well I figured I'd look anyway.... I didn't pick them up I just took my led light and put it on top of the eggs out of 7 eggs I saw good viening in 3 and some in 1 and the others were either clear looking or something I wasn't sure what was.. <G> So my question.... since the temp spike was overnight between day 1 and 2 if I'd killed them then I wouldn't have any veins... right? Might I actually get some duckies out of this?!

I only was going to candle one egg...but once I started I couldn't stop

. Last night was day 4 so I guess this would be at 4.5 days. I see stuff!!! It's so exciting! I can see why it's so addictive. Of my 4 australorps I think 3 aren't going to develop, but that includes 2 that had (and still have) detached air sacs. Can't see any light through my ee/ameraucana egg. The sussex and faverolles I can see dark blobs and veining in a few. I had such little hope after their rough shipping & four were crushed, the remainders were covered in the mess. Question - in many I see the dark "blob" in the top of the egg - large end - but the clear part is in the bottom pointy end. Is that normal?
That is how mine all are.Dont know if its normal but out of 7 hatchs they alll were dark at the big end.I got some chicks out of most of those hatches..

I am no expert but they say vein is the best sign of living babies.
